False chimney advice please...

I currently have my 32" lcd tv mounted onto a false chimney breast which is 1.2m wide, 0.18m deep and around 2.2m high. The chimney breast was there when we moved in.
What i plan to do is to sink the tv into the wall making it flush with the wall.
I'm not too sure where to start.. Would it be easier to take down all the plasterboard on the front of the chimney breast or to cut a hole in the wall only where i want the tv to be and build the framework from there?
I've tried to attach a photo of what it is like now.
Thanks in advance...

Re: False chimney advice please...

Are you sure it is a false one and not an old boarded up one? If it is an old one you might find that it has a supporting lintel just above where the fire would have been. Does the chimney breast run straight up and through the bedroom above?

If so I am guessing it will have a supporting lintel and hacking into the brickwork above this to create an opening for the tv could have the whole lot come crashing down.

Take a look at the images in this thread Chimney Breast & Flue Removal for Wall Mounted LCD (& future HTPC)

I'm pretty sure that it is a flase chimney breastas when we were fitting the current bracket to the wall we couldn't find anything behind the plasterboard.
The chimney breast doesn't go up and through the room above either although there is a metal flu between the walls going up to the loft space.
The house was built late 80's.

In that case I would be tempted to remove the plasterboard and start fresh. You are much better off knowing exactly what is behind it in regards to existing framework etc.
