Question LED lit glass shelves (Help and Advise please)

Hi, i'm a new member to this forum, after going on it a lot I though I will become a member and as I see that so many of you are very helpful and polite I thought I will ask my questions here!

Firstly, i'm sorry if this is not the right place to post this but I have seen other posts in here similar to mine, and I searched for my question already and could not find an answer.

Ok, so I have a loft room which is my bedroom, i'm currently decorating it before I go and buy my elecrtronics!

So as you will know in most loft rooms you have a triangle thing, which comes from the chimney I think. Well that's my main wall that will stand out from everything else. My plasma will be hanging above it which will be a TX-P50G10 and below will be the triangle thing that goes in on the wall. So I want to build shelves there so that I can put all my stuff on there like my consoles and media players and so on.

Now the question, is there any possible way of create glass shelves there that will emit light through it so that the edges light up. Meaning if I got LED strips and stuck them on the wall and fitted the shelves against those strips will the light emit through the glass shelves?

I'm trying to get red lights to mit throught it and I want the glass to have like a light red on the surface but to be more red-er on the edge of the glass.

So is there anyone out there that can help me because now i'm clueless

Thanks

I think I know what you mean, not sure if it would work as well with glass though as it would with a clear perspex shelve. Someone correct me if im wrong though.

i will correct you. It works fine with glass as i have fitted them in kitchen units before. The light refracts through the shelve and come out the front of the glass

Re: LED lit glass shelves (Help and Advise please)

A friend of mine did this ages ago with those Ikea LED strips. Nice and simple solution and did the job well.

These are the ones he used http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00119419
I have some of the plain blue ones on the back of my wall mounted lcd. Looks nice at night time and reduces eye strain.

The prices on their website are not the correct prices.

Thanks but way out of my budget! Even if they are the wrong prices, I will need about 6 and I was hoping to have them in red, but thanks anyway!

Re: LED lit glass shelves (Help and Advise please)

The website prices are roughly triple the real price.

You will definitely find something similar in red - or more likely RGB.

What is your budget?

I have done similar in car audio installs using perspex.
The light will travel through the glass and out the other end. if you use led lights these will show up as dots. however if you frost the lip of the glass it will defuse the light and give a more even glow. I will try and get some pics.

Erm, not more than £50 on the lights, although I need them in different lengths so I guess it varies, but nothing too expensive.

Hi Mate,

Perspex/Acrylic might be the best route to go!

As someone mentioned you can pass light through it if you polish the edges!

I used to work in the plastics insdustry so your best bet is to try a sign maker who might have offcuts (depending on your size) and he'll be able to polish the edges for you!

10mm would be your best bet and depending on were you go you might be able to get Glass Look which has a slight green tinge to it which looks good!

Good luck!
