Removing cigarette smoke smells from AV equipment?

Hi,

Does anyone have any tips or advice how to remove stale cigarette smoke smells from AV equipment ?

I've recently bought a second hand receiver and it obviously came from a house that smoked 1000 cigs. per day.

I've tried the obvious - damping a clean face cloth into warm, mild detergent and this has cleaned up the unit alot - but not removed the smell.

I have also read that damping the face cloth in either clear vinegar or bicarbonate of soda might be worth trying out but I don't want to try iy out and end up accidentally taking any of the lettering off.

Any further suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Re: Removing cigarette smoke smells from AV equipment?

Just give it time i reckon mate. I had a similar situation about 2 months ago when I bought a 5ft fish tank. It stunk of cigarette smoke. I cleaned it & it was still there. Now that time has passed it has lost the smell. There are 'odour eaters' out there though which might be worth a look if you cant shift it. Remember that the smoke will have gone through the air vents and inside the unit aswell where you possibly have not cleaned?

You have to grin and bear it. Shot of cleaning the whole thing with ipa or distilled water. But you would need to take the thing apart and I wouldn't try that if I was you unless you repare these things for a job or know someone who does.

I would put one of those evaporative room deodorisers new the equipment..and even have a fan blowing through it for a few hours..
That will get right into the gear..
