Hiding holes in a wall - what is this?

Anyone know what that box is that the bloke in the pic is using to hide the jagged hole he's cut in the wall?



Better shot of it here at the 01:25 and 03:00 min marks.

Its a cavity wall pattress/back box with holes pre scored for knocking out to enable the cable to be fed through. The box is secured by two lugs with two screw holes which the faceplate is screwed onto, as the screws are tightened the lugs grip the inside of the stud wall/cavity ensuring a secure fit. One type of faceplate is a brushed one which looks like the rear of a letter box, this allows the cable to run freely and finishes the job off. PM an AVF member 'albriscoe' as he makes the brushed faceplates as a hobby.

Thanks for that. Very comprehensive

One thing though, I've google image searched pattress boxes and all of them have a solid back. The one in the video clip is basically a square box with no back and a 'frame' around it to hide where the wall was cut. Same thing?

The back can be cut right out to accommodate large/thick cables, this is easily done with a hack saw or a pair of pliers (if not too fussy(, although the second method may leave a rough finish.

As Duncs says, just cut the back of the box out to suit your requirements, but these aren't designed to be a final finish. They're just the backboxes designed to fix onto a plasterboard wall. The brush faceplate Duncs mentions then simply screws over the front.

The point of my post was to say that these are rather expensive to buy from computer network specialists, but I noticed Wickes now sell them as well, so worth a look in there if there's one near you. You'll be able to get the backbox there as well.
