My Home Cinema

Here is my Home Cinema, the cinema was finished at the end of March it took about 4 weeks to do & was done mostly in the evenings and weekends. All the work was carried out by me and was something I have never done before.

There are loads of things I would have done differently and a lot I still want to do, but for now this will have to do the job, which it does really well. The projector is a Barco Graphics 808 and the screen is 7ft.

The room is 23ft x 12ft and seats 8 people without a problem. We have traditional cinema seats fitted to the rear.

I have often thought about converting my garage but have wondered how it would affect the property value and the
potential resale. I guess what value you lose from the garage you regain with the extra room.

Perhaps the estate agents amongst us could comment?

Like zap I've also had my garage converted and according to a mate who is an estate agent the value will drop.
However if you're planning on staying in the property a while nothing compares to having the dedicated room and who knows, come the time to sell, a fellow AV enthusiast could be the viewer...

So zap what are the things you'd still like to do and as mentioned earlier, why the 4:3 screen?

Flipper I had my house valued a few months ago by 2 estate agents they never mentioned what I had done reduced the value, however I do have off street parking for 4 cars so maybe that helps. I bought this house for its cinema potential. I was always see my garage as a place where junk just gathers dust.

I kept the room as simple as possible just for the re-sale really the room can de converted back to a normal room with ease.

the 4x3 screen is really for 2 reasons the 1st is because it is the native resolution of the projector and I was told, that where possible use as much of the phosphor as possible, which I do because the 2nd reason is I use it for watching a lot of football on sky. When watching widescreen stuff you would never know the screen was 4x3.

Things I would do differently would be mostly in the construction, If I had the money I would have dug the floor out, I would have got the room fully plastered instead of just dry-lining. I should have put in mains halogen lamps & will do one day the 12v one are not compatible with x10 lighting controllers. The other main thing I would have done differently is the projector I think knowing what I know now I may have gone for an lcd/dlp. I know people will say I am mad, but I am forever adjusting the barco even just a little bit. I have to go into the settings probably once a month & it is so big it really does take up a huge amount of space in the ceiling. However the picture is stunning so it's not all bad.

The newer DLPs like the HT1000 and HD2 chips aren't far behind CRT at all now. In fact, I'd say within 5 to 10% image quality wise. That's provided both are set up correctly of course.

Fore the convenience, it's a no brainer IMHO.

A good room mate.
I took the plunge in the summer and decided on a similar colour scheme. It's a good compromise for black as we need to use the room for other things. I had in wall speakers put in and my PJ in the other room which helps cut down fan noise and light spill.
