My new DIY center speaker stand

Hi all

I just finished making a speaker stand for my 15kg Tag McLaren Calliope center speaker.

First a few (little) money-shots.

Some less glamorous side shots...

Material used (you have to change the dimensions to your requirement):

• 1 smallish MDF board (used as the base of the stand): 500x500x16mm
• 1 small MDF board (used at the top plate): 300x250x16mm
• 2 length of soft wood (used as the stand two columns): ~6x6x100cm
• 2 pieces of plastic drain pipes (to "dress" the two columns): ~7x99.5cm
• 16 wood screws: 5x65mm
• a yoga mat :D (to "dress" the top plate)
• a couple of door stops (to angle the speaker)
• some spray paint

Equipment required:

• a drill
• some glue or a staple gun

================== Step 1 =================

Screwing the two columns to the base plate

Drill 4 holes per column in the base plate (I know, there are 6 in the photo ).
Used these holes to mark and pre-drill 4 holes for the screws in each column.
Screw them woody bits.

================== Step 2 =================

Sliding the two drain pipes over the two columns

This is the hardest part of the whole project.

Screwing the top plate to the two columns

Do it the same way you fixed the columns to the base plate.

Finishing the top plate

I used a yoga mat (painted in black) to cover the top plate because:

1. I had bits of an old one (don't ask)
2. it is paintable and easy to work with
3. it makes a nice padding for the speaker
4. I had nothing better to use.

If needed, screw or blu-tak the door stops to the top plate.

Admire the result of your handy work

Step 6 (or 1 or 1b or 2...) could have been "Painting the base plate".
As it is hidden under the TV unit and I didn't have any paint left I didn't bother.

I didn't bother with spikes either.

Hello Liam.

My previous center speaker was an M&K S85.
I used to remove it from the stand (an MDF/softwood job attached to the back of the TV) and place it in front of the TV on the tv unit.

I now project above the speaker when watching 2:35 movies and shrink the image when watching 16:9 ones.

My next DIY project will be a 2:35 screen.
(unless I can find a cheap good one)
