Granite isolation under speakers, spike or not to spike!

I just did this diy upgrade (argos granite chopping boards ) am quite impressed with the result sound wise (other reason was steadying my wobbly iQ5's on carpet, much better on solid flat surface)

BUT

this leads to another quandry...

Do I ditch the spikes on the iQ5's and put rubber dome pads underneath (to me seems better, will be dead flat without spike faffing adjustment, plus cant skate around on the granite surface)

What have you guys done with your floorstanders on granite platforms?

Re: Granite isolation under speakers, spike or not to spike!

Hi. Ive got some ms avanti 902i's on stands on spikes on granite downstairs.
I think they sound good.

Upstairs i have some XTZ' 93WMT's on their own Floor stand 99's (no spikes just rubber) and then on granite slabs from tescos.

To my ears, both setups definately improved using the slabs.
Particularly upstairs where the floor is boarded and leaks sound, the granite seems to both tighten and isolate the sound.

So i think its just down to your own ears really. see if you prefer with or without the spikes? p

Re: Granite isolation under speakers, spike or not to spike!

thanks P, definitely impressed with how its tightened up the sound noticed the difference right away

I think I might try some rubber feet apart from anything it will stop them being able to be moved so easily on the granite (plus lowering them a bit more than the spikes to making them less topple over-able)

Going to get another for for my sub now

cheers. I dont think youll notice any reduction in quality. And if you need them more secure then definately go the rubber route. Homebase sell some pretty good stick on rubber pads if i remember.

Ive also got my sub on one of the Tesco granite slabs.

I had a look at the Tesco site last evening, but couldn't find any slabs other than the placemets......

yeah gutted! I bought 2 only a couple of days ago for £12 each! ah well I went down at lunch and bought a 3rd for my sub, granite a go go in my front room now

these will protect a wood floor too, they have 4 foam rubber feet on the bottom which will help isolate and extra vibration.

Re: Granite isolation under speakers, spike or not to spike!

400mm thick is good should get no vibration through that, I would have preferred 300mm on the chopping boards but its not something I wanted to spend a fortune on and it has made a difference.

Other option is look for granite surface plates, variety of sizes (and prices) but they are usually at least 400mm thickness

Re: Granite isolation under speakers, spike or not to spike!

You might mean 40mm thick!! 400mm is nealy 16 inches thick - good luck with lifting one of those!
