Exclamation New Project - False Chimney

I've been looking at this forum and threads for a few days now to gain some ideas on a project i'd like to undertake, most prob have the professionals in to do it.

I'd like to create a false chimney which will house a 32" or even a 37" LCD screen and L /R and centre Bose AM10 speakers. Can this be acheived from a single 8x4 MDF sheet, the room height is spot on almost 8ft. We have a flat wall stretching from one end to the other of our lounge, the lounge is 26x12.

I know there is a alot more to it than this, but just trying to gain some ideas as to how i go about planning this.

How much would a reputable company charge to create this. I'm based in Essex.

Re: New Project - False Chimney

False chimneys are much better off by stud walling, plasterboarding then being plastered... you could do it out of MDF if you really wanted but it wouldn't be that great in my opinion.

Floating walls are done using MDF though but rarely deep enough to house in-wall speakers.

No ideas on prices I'm afraid, would imagine quite a lot as you'd need a builder, a plasterer and an electrician for wiring up the power.

Re: New Project - False Chimney

Hi charlie007,

I'm a fair way through a false chimney build myself and have used a single sheet of mdf for the front of it (thread and pics here - ....and so it begins - my first install, a fake chimney breast). Cutting the spaces for the speaker, tv and feature hole were fairly easy but took a fair amount of planning to make sure they're in the right place for the frame.

If I could do it again I would definately cut these holes out first to be perfectly square to each other and the edges of the board then build the frame to fit it.

Unfortunately I can't help when it comes to any companies to do it for you as I've tackled it myself!

Cheers,
jamesk190

Re: New Project - False Chimney

Cost wise I'd guesstimate about £1000+VAT.

Re: New Project - False Chimney

Thanks for the comments so far, Jamesk190 - I'm reading your thread closely, your doing a great job so far, something a little beyond me. But i'm eagerly watching your progress - How did you decide on the height of the TV?
