I have recently changed my Sony Home Cinema DAV-DZ231 to the DAV-DZ260 so that I could have at least one 'digital optical input' and upscaling to 1080p but I am having problems setting it up and would like some help/advice please.

Ok, firstly when I installed my DAV-DZ231 a few months ago, I connected it to my Sony TV using HDMI and then did a 'Quick Setup' and chose 16:9, RGB and chose 'standard speaker formation'. I then connected the calibration mic and started calibrating the speakers using the test tones and the calibration was completed successfully. I then just used it to play DVD's through it and also Blu-Ray DVD's from my PS3 through it. No problems at all.

This afternoon I changed the DAV-DZ231 to my new DAV-DZ260 and carried out the exact same procedure as I did with my DZ231 but that's when I started to get problems.

After doing the first part of the 'Quick Setup', language, 16:9, RGB etc, I connected the new calibration mic and started calibrating the speakers. First thing I noticed was the the first 5 tones went all around the speakers but each speaker was not lit up on the 'on-screen' video as the tone when through it and the 'subwoofer' had no tone going through it.

After that, the next set of tones went through the speakers but again, except for the 'subwoofer', each speaker was lit up as the tone went through it and still no tone went to the 'subwoofer'

I checked the wires of the subwoofer and they were fine. I then went into speaker setup and fired a test tone through the speakers and this time the test tone went through the subwoofer and it was lit up. I have tried the calibration test many time since then and still get the same results. I.e. The first five tones go around the FL, FR, CENTER, RL and RR with each speaker not highlighted and still no tone from the subwoofer.

After many, many attempts I gave up and popped a DVD into the DZ260 tray, it started to read it and just as it started to play, I got a message in the bottom right of the TV display: "Unsupported audio device". "Check your device output". I have no clue what is wrong and the only thing that has changed in my setup is that instead of using the sony supplied "SCART to three phono cable and adapter" to connect the PS3 to the back of the DZ260, I connected an optical cable from the PS3 optical out, to the AMP 'optical input'.

Just one other thing reagarding the "audio output settings" on the PS3. after I connected the PS3 to the AM using the optical connection, I went into the PS3 "audio output settings" and chose "Digital Out" and used the 'NAV' key to navigate right and this is where I need some advice.

Under "Select output format supported by the TV or AMP". In here were 'checkboxes' for:

Dolby Digital 5.1 CH
DTS 5.1
AAC
Linear PCM 2 CH. 44.1kHz
Linear PCM 2 CH. 88.2kHz
Linear PCM 2 CH. 176.4kHz
Linear PCM 2 CH. 48kHz

The first and the last LINEAR options were 'light gray' and already checked, can anyone confirm why these were checked and what other options I should be putting a check mark in?

I puzzled as to why I am getting ptoblems with the DZ260 and yet had absolutely none with my previous DZ231, especially as they are almost the same.

In the PS3 setup have you also chosen to output audio via optical rather than HDMI?

Another thing to try is to set the HDMI Audio out to off in the setup of the HDMI setup menu of the DAV. Possibly your tv is receiving a audio signal over HDMI that it can't decode.

Yes, digital optical was chosen over HDMI and I thought that my comments below should cover this?

No I have not yet tried your suggestion below. I have now reset the DZ260 to default factory settings, and removed ALL other connections from the AMP and it and now connected to the TV via HDMI. So now I am going to try a 'quick setup' again and then give the calibration of the speakers another try and hopefully, it will perform as it should?

I really need to know what "output formats" to choose in the PS3 audio settings (see first post), once I select audio via optical but I wont be connecting the PS3 to the AMP again until I have the AMP setup and calibrated correctly. So if any user's have this setup or similar, I appreciate some advice.

It's beyond me why I am having problems with the DZ260 because apart from the optical/coaxial outputs, the USB connection and support for 1080p upscaling, the units are just about the same.

I just hope that this new AMP is not faulty because I don't really fancy boxing it up and sending it back to the seller (Amazon).

I've been trying to find what formats the DAV-DZ260 supports over optical and can only find this in the manual in the troubleshooting section.

There is no sound from the DIGITAL IN COAXIAL/OPTICAL jack The sampling frequency of the input signal is more than 48kHz

So that means you won't be able to use the 5th and 6th options in your list. It does support DTS, so that can be used. It also says it supports AAC via the USB, so don't know if this applies to optical as well.

I have had an 42" LG TV with optical out, I have Sky + which is connect to a Philips DVD Recorder (connected via HDMI to TV), I bought a Sony DAV-DZ 260 Connected via HDMI), I have connected the whole system as per set up. I have connected optical output on TV to the Sony DAV-DZ260 optical input, I still can't get surround sound, what have I done wrong?

I too have recently bought a DAV simply for upscaling of DVD's and SS for them however I cannot get my TV to play through the system.
TV is a Techwood 37722HD connected by HDMI lead, as far as I can tell from the manual the TV image should show when the DAV is switched to TV mode but all I get is the SONY screen. I have tried a new HDMI lead and reset the system but still nothing. I have heard on forums the solve is to connect TV by scart but don't really want to do this because the reason I bought the system was to get rid of the scart leads (TV is wall mounted some distance from other sources which makes the leads thick and bulky).
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I have purchased a sony dav 260 system and a bravia tv, everytime i turn the tv on, it goes mute on the dvd system, this is getting annoying..as any one any Ideas
