Connecting PS3 and Surround Sound?

Hi,

Posting this on behalf of my dad who wanted some information:

Basically he has a Samsung TV with 3 HDMI ports (sky, PS3 and surround sound)

PS3

Samsung surround sound

The manual of the PS3 says to set up the system using surround sound is very simple. HDMI from TV to surround sound and one HDMI from surround sound to PS3 - All Simple.

Only thing is the surround sound only has one HDMI out so cant use it as a middle man so to speak,

How is this possible as the PS3 works on normal sound from tv and Sky also works from the surround sound?

Re: Connecting PS3 and Surround Sound?

What Samsung system is it (model number)? The HDMI connection on the Samsung is an output to carry the video from its built in DVD player to the TV. Ideally you're looking for an optical (also known as toslink) input. This will give you DD5.1 & DTS. You would need to set the PS3 to output audio over optical in the sound settings menu, ensuring it is set to bitstream in the BD/DVD settings (I'm pretty sure it is by default) and then select this digital input (D-IN) on the Samsung remote.

If the Samsung does not have optical inputs, it may have analogue (red/white) phono inputs, in which case you would need to use the basic AV cable that came with the PS3 connecting the red/white cables only. This will give you pseudo surround sound.

Hi This is Lee's dad. Its a Samsung HT-TZ215 Digital Home Cinema System which has only one Optical in slot and currently has an optical cable going from it to the Sky+HD box which works fine on surround sound. Purchased a PS3 on saturday but don't know how to get surround sound. Can I achieve true surround sound from both my sky and PS3 with only having one optical input on my Samsong Home cinema? My tv is a Samsong LE40. Thanks for trying to help us, really appreciated.

Hi Lee's Dad!

Yes, you have a couple of options. One options is to use a toslink splitter which will work in reverse providing only one source is on at a time i.e. if both PS3 and Sky+HD boxes are on at the same time, no audio will pass. Connect both PS3 and Sky+HD via optical to the splitter and run another optical cable from the splitter to the optical input. The easiest method is to use a 3 way manual optical switch with the same connection method. I recommend audiovisualonline for both the switch and the fisual pro optical cable (you'll need 2).

Hi Dave,

I have connected an optical cable from sky to the splitter and an optical cable from the ps3 to the splitter and an optical cable from the splitter to the input of my home cinema but I get absolutely no sound at all until I turn off the home cinema. This is with only one or the other of sky and ps3 on. What have I done wrong or not done, any ideas .

Possibly too much signal degradation, you could try shorter leads if feasible with no guarantee of success, or buy a reasonable quality optical switch (see earlier post with link).

Question

Hi guys

Just wondering if theres anything you can do for me..

i Bought my ps3 couple of years ago and only now decided to buy surround sound... but i went out not knowing that the surround sound had to have an optical port for the ps3 to be able to connect too it ( i thought i had done all my homework on it obviously not!)

So i was wondering is there any way possible that the ps3 can be connected to my dvd/amp in any other way?

For example is there such things as converters? which convert the optical signal to a phono red and white cable signal?

Any help will do

Thanks Kris
