How can blu-ray player work in 5.1 surround sound using home cinema system

Need help!

Just bought LG dvd home cinema system. My problem is that I cannot get the 5.1 surround sound working through my blu-ray player. It works fine with the dvd home cinema provided.

I tried different things including:
(1) having an optical lead from the tv to home cinema system and hdmi cable from tv to blu-ray player and only certain speakers will work (but not 5.1).

(2) having the optical lead from home cinema system to blu-ray player and hdmi cable to blu-ray player and still only some speakers work.

It is the rear speakers that have no output sound.

Is there something im missing from my setup up? Is there a way of getting my blu-ray player to work in 5.1 through my home cinema system?

Thanks

Connect the Bluray player direct using the optical cable and set to bitstream in the audio setup.

I've connected optical cable to the blu ray player but have had no luck within the set up of my blu ray player. I have no option to set to bitstream in the audio setup?

Re: How can blu-ray player work in 5.1 surround sound using home cinema system

Once you mentioned online user manual I checked that out and now i know the bitstream was 2ch PCM. So set Audio output to that and the audio output priority (as my bluray player audio setup states) to coaxial/optical and now I've got 5.1!!

Thanks for the help.
