prize win help

Hi all,
I am after some advice. I recently won in a competition a
Philips 42pfl7404h/12 42" TV
Yamaha RX-V765 av receiver
Harman/Kordon HKTS 7 Home theater system
Panasonic DMR 79EB DVD Recorder.

I have a standard sky digital box, (just waiting for my hd box to come through, next week or so).

For the last 2 weeks i have tried to set it all up but to no avail. My wife is at her wits end not being able to watch her matthew McConaughey films in surround sound.

Only having a 15 year old tv until i won this prize I'm totally behind the times as far as home cinema etc.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Re: prize win help

How far have you got? What cables do you have?

The Sky box will connect straight to the TV via SCART from the socket marked 'TV' (set it to RGB,16:9,SCART Control=On in the picture settings)

Then connect another SCART cable from the 'VCR' SCART socket on the Sky box to the DVD Recorder

* Optional - To hear audio from Sky via your amp, connect a pair of phono cables (red/white) to the amp AV5 phono input. You probably have a red/white phono cable lying around - just ignore the yellow (video) cable. You will need to select this input to hear audio from the DVD Recorder by pressing the AV5 button on the amp

The DVD Recorder will connect to the TV via HDMI

Then connect an optical (toslink) cable from the DVD Recorder to the RX-V765 AV4 optical input. Go into the DVD Recorder's audio/sound settings menu and ensure it is set to 'BITSTREAM'. You will need to select this input to hear audio from the DVD Recorder by pressing the AV4 button on the amp

** Or you can connect the DVD Recorder to the amp via HDMI and then run another HDMI cable to the TV

I am assuming that you have speaker cables (or LINK)and a subwoofer cable for the HKTS7 speaker system? If not, you will need to buy some. Measure out each run using string/wool enusuring you allow for a bit of slack and to reach the speakers if they're wall mounted or on stands. Connect each speaker in turn and connect the subwoofer up from the subwoofer pre-out to the L(eft) input on the subwoofer. I'm not familiar with the sub but set to On, set the crossover all the way around and the gain at half (12 o'clock). If there are any switches on the rear of the sub post back what they are.

Connect up the mic and run the speaker calibration. In the manual setup of the amp, set the speaker sizes to small and the crossover at 80hz. This is a recommended starting point (THX) setting.

When you get Sky+HD, you will have a couple of connection options. You could route the Sky+HD and DVD Recorder via the amp using HDMI or just connect the Sky+HD direct to the TV. You would need another HDMI cable from the amp to the TV. However, I would connect direct to the TV via HDMI and to the amp via digi-coax or optical (AV1 TV). Sky+HD only outputs stereo over HDMI so a separate digital audio cable is required. You need to change the settings to 'DOLBY D' under optical output in the sound settings menu.

I wouldn't bother connecting the audio from the TV but if you do, you can either use analogue (red/white) or digi-coax. If you do, you can use this to pass audio from both the Freeview tuner and Sky

Once complete you can make manual adjustments to the amp's setup and rename the inputs

Re: prize win help

Thanks for the quick responce. So far i have got 3 hdmi cables. The HKTS7 system came with all the cables which i have put up as instructed and i have also done the auto setup on the amp to test them and they are fine.
I will get some optical cables tommorrow and after work will have a go at making it work.

Once again thanks for the Quick reply.

Re: prize win help

If you have three HDMI cables, use that from the DVD Recorder and then one more from the DVD Recorder to the TV from the amp. The DVD Recorder should pass bitstream audio over HDMI.
