Connecting PS3, Sony TV + Sony Home Cinema

Hi everyone,

I have a Playstation 3, a Sony KDL 40V4000 TV and I am considering buying a Sony DAV-DZ260 5.1 Home Cinema system.

As far as I know, my PS3 has an optical output and the Home Cinema system has an optical input. This should be a piece of cake. However, I would also like to have my TV running through the surround system, even if it's not in 5.1 (I have freeview). I believe my TV has an optical output too. Would it be possible to connect them all in the following way?

PS3 -> TV via HDMI
Cinema System -> TV via HDMI
TV -> Cinema System via Optical Output

Would that work? If not, what are the alternatives? I would rather not use a splitter.

Thanks for any advice you have.

EDIT: It looks like that Sony DAV-DZ260 model is totally discontinued and the replacement does not have any optical inputs! Perhaps this will have to go on the back burner for a bit.

I think you would need to connect direct, it doesn't look like your TV passes DD over from HDMI to optical but check the manual to confirm. If this is the case, you'll need a manual optical switch. A toslink splitter would not work as one of your sources is a TV which will be active all the time.

Hi Davepuma,

Thanks for your reply. How do I find out if my TV outputs DD via HDMI to optical? Is there a name of this technology. I', pretty sure that it doesn't output any sound via phono sockets that originates from an HDMI source (i.e. PS3). Is it likely to be the same case with the optical cable?

Is the optical output simply to output the TV audio signal (and nothing else) to an amp?
