Re: Is setting up Surround Sound, with Sky HD and PS3 easy??

You'll need a 3 way manual optical switch, with each source connected to the switch and a further optical cable going from the output of the switch to the single optical input on the SC-PT470. You would select the D-IN input on the SC-PT470 to hear the external sources.

The Sky+HD box will have to be set to "DOLBY D" under optical output in the sound settings.

The PS3 will have to be set to output audio over optical in the audio setup and bistream.

Try audiovisualonline for the switch and fisual pro optical cables if you need more.

Yes. If you're thinking of routing the audio via the TV, this will result in lesser audio quality. Some TV's can pass Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from the HDMI inputs back out the optical output but I don't think your TV can and even if it could, Sky+ HD only outputs DD5.1 over optical (and on newer boxes over digi-coax as well) so you have to use the separate audio connection.

Re: Is setting up Surround Sound, with Sky HD and PS3 easy??

It might be "working" but what audio format are you hearing? It could be a pseudo effect e.g. dolby pro logic ii, which isn't true surround sound. If it is, then your TV can pass audio from the HDMI input back out the optical output. However, Sky+HD must be connected directly (via the switch) as it does not pass DD5.1 over HDMI and can only do this via a digital audio connection.

Your home cinema system might allow you to make manual adjustments to the speaker levels. It should tell you in the manual.

To reiterate dolby pro logic is nowhere near as good as true discrete multi-channel audio e.g. Dolby Digital 5.1 / DTS

Welcome to the forum

In order to hear audio from the PS3 you will probably have to route the PS3 audio direct to the Philips system. Does it have optical? Philips usually use digi-coax (Orange RCA connector) on their home cinema systems for some strange reason, so if that is the case you will need to buy an optical to digi-coax convertor.

PS3 - Converter via optical cable

Converter to Philips via digi-coax cable

It sounds like your TV only outputs audio over the SCART TV out via the built-in Freeview tuner and therefore any external sources will have to be connected directly. Have you tried an analogue audio cable from the TV, providing the Philips has analogue audio in (red/white)? The only way to get true discrete multi-channel surround i.e. Dolby Digital and DTS from the PS3 is via the optical out in your case, providing the Philips has a digital audio input. DD5.1/DTS are vastly superior to matrix effects such as dolby pro logic ii.

Without more information on the available connections on the Philips system and perhaps the model number, the good folks here will struggle to advise further.

PS. You really should have started a new thread

The above will stand for the PS3. Does it not have an analogue audio input (red/white)? Check the specs to see if it can accept audio over the SCART connection.
