Angry Wireless interference Sonos/ Video Sender etc

Hi all,

Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong area of expertise and please if a Mod can move, greatly appreciated

Essentially I have a Sonos system setup (and working fine) at home aswell as a video sender sending my Sky upstairs from my Front Room to my Bedroom.
Now recently all of a sudden I'm getting alot of interference with my video sender and the picture on my telly and I'm wondering if anyone has a) seen the same or b) can advise me of anything (preferably software as I have a wireless laptop - it's not turned on) that can scan the area to see if there's any 'crossover' in signal.

My video sender is a Thompson and has 4 'channels' to send on, and Sonos also has 3 channels. Aside my mobile phone I don't have anything else turned on wirelessly that should be interfering so I should be able to find a balance (I hope).

Any help, tips, or just general opinion on my plight greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Re: Wireless interference Sonos/ Video Sender etc

Surely you should just try the different channels in turn until you find a channel that isn't as bad as the rest. Those video senders aren't much use in my opinion. I used one years ago but the pic quality was woeful on an LCD and I also started getting interference. This could be from my own wifi setup, DECT phones, microwave ovens, central heating boilers and obviously the same from nearby houses. Good luck though! The newer video senders aren't as prone to interference though but I have no experience of using them. Use the search function and I'm sure some answers will turn up.

Re: Wireless interference Sonos/ Video Sender etc

Yeh you are right dave, I just would like to see what's floating about my house to see if I can isolate the frequency a bit more simply than suck it and see.
Of couse I can just go VS1/S1,S2,S3... VS2/S1,S2,S3 etc but not only is that highly tedious I can only think I'm gonna get this problem if I get a DECT or my neighbour buys one or something just a stupid.

As you can tell I kinda agree with regards to the flimsyness of a VS... except that I've had no issues with my Thom VS in the 3 or 4 years I've had it AND certainly not with my Sonos in the few years I've had that too.

Now I have moved one of my Zone Players closer to the VS receiver so that MIGHT be involved, especially as that ZP is a receiver too.

So ideally if I know what's what (ZP's aren't supposed to broadcast on the same frequency as normal wireless anyway) then I can fiddle accordingly.

I have the annoying feeling this is my nextdoor neighbour having bought something that's causing this and if so I'm going to be highly unamused having to buy another VS on the basis of that.

Very??????

Just a quick bump to see if anyone can help any more... am considering another option (Slingbox Pro-HD & Catcher) now as the interference is EXTREMELY annoying. Obviously if I didn't have to shell out for my £300 solution I'd be very

I'm a newbie, but have finally got my Sonos up and running after 2 years of frustrating anf intermittent problems, so may have some useful info, but YMMV
My problem: v old cottage (huge thick walls), wifi unreliable.. (& therefore Sonosnet too).

I got running intermittentently using powerline adapters to put ethernet through mains, but still unreliable at 14Mbps, which was the powerline router/modem spec at the time of buying. Using same router I have disabled it's powerline capability, but connected it to a seperate 85Mbps powerline adapter.

This is now fast enough to reliably stream NAS stored tracks, Napster & Internet radio with no droupouts at all, and we're finally basking in sound.

So my set up is:

(Study) NAS (Thecus N3200 with 2x1TB HB configured as RAID 5) connected to:
(Study) Router connected to Powerline adapter 85Mbps
(Study) ZP100 connected direct to router
(Lounge) ZP80 connected to Powerline adapter 85Mbps
(Dining Room) ZP100 connects wirelessly happily to Sonosnet probably via Lounge ZP80
(Bedroom) ZP100 connected to Powerline adapater 85Mbps
(Conservatory) ZP100 connects wirelessly happily to SOnosnet probably via Study ZP100

The 85Mbps powerline adapters are now around £20 each, widely available, and need no technical knowledge to set up. At maximum you'd need one for your router, and one for each Zone Player, which would be likely to be much less than £300!

HTH

(If you alse use wifi for Internet, this won't resolve your wifi interference, but you can use the powerline adapters to connect laptops to internet via ethernet cable (or just use ethernet cable plugged into back of Zone Player!)

:-)

Hi ketfc,

Thanks for this update, really useful to see how other people are using their Sonos system.
I'm not sure my Sonos is the issue to be totally honest. I've been using it with a Devolo mains line adapter and my WD 1Tb MYBOOK Nas without any issues from day dot, music all around no problem.

The thing that's causing signal problems is the video sender I have transmitting my Sky signal upstairs. Even though Sonosnet is supposed to be independent of the 2.4Ghz video senders broadcast on I have at times had to switch the video sender channels and found that Sonos did cross the band because I turned my zone players off and the video sender signal cleared up.

However I think someone nearby bought a wireless router and I found a program called NetStumbler which lets you see whats broadcasting wireless-wise around and can see lots of new dots I never saw before. I personally have my wireless turned off as I am cabled using the mains adapters in most places I need access to my LAN.

With the whole 'signal' interference problem, I didn't even fancy upgrading my video sender to a 5.8Ghz one to get away from the routers just to get stuck in the same issue again when someone buys a 5.8GHz DECT phone which I hear are in dev in a year or two. I've never had any major interference problems in the 3 years I had my Sonos, so I went the way of the SingboxPro-HD and SlingCatcher.
Now the interference issue is gone, as the Sky signal is sent over my LAN (also over the mains adapter actually!) and also the catcher allows me to browse network shares and play video files from my NAS on my upstairs telly too.

An expensive solution I agree, but it gives me additional functionality and if someone buys a DECT phone or different router I won't be pulling the little hair I have left out again...!

Cheers for your time tho, much appreciated!!
