PAL signal through Denon 1610 to Optoma HD65 problems

Hi,
My current setup is a Denon 1610 hooked up to an Optoma HD65 projector via HDMI. This works perfectly for HDMI inputs, such as the Xbox 360, but where I start to have problems is the composite inputs. Because I'm in Britain, a lot of older hardware like my Freeview box and older games consoles output at 480p via composite. When this is fed through the 1610, it converts it to an HDMI 480p (50Hz) signal and sends it to the projector. Unfortunately, the projector doesn't seem to like this signal, and projects the colours incorrectly (red becomes purple, and blue becomes black). If the composite input is 576i (60Hz), then the projector displays correctly.

So my question is this:
Is there anyway of getting the 1610 to convert 480p composite to any other format on HDMI, or would that require the scaler chip in the 1910? Alternatively is there any way of getting the HD65 to display 480p over HDMI properly?

Thanks in advance.
