Toslink to Philips HTS3568 via splitter

I'm trying to hook up a 360, PS3 and HD Satellite Receiver to a Philips HTS3568 for 5.1 via one of these...

eBay.ie: 3 Way Optical TOS Link Cable Splitter Digital Audio DVD (item 200401623544 end time 03-Dec-09 12:56:47 GMT)

Unfortunately I'm not hearing a peep outta the speakers. I'm getting the red light at the tip of the cables themselves and I've connected the toslinks directly from each device to the HTS3568 and they work fine. Any ideas...? Is the splitter not up to par?

Sounds that way, only advice I would give is keep all your individual leads as short as possible.

Some people seem to get away with using them, others dont.

Of course there is an outside chance its faulty, but if you can see a red glow on the lead that goes into the Philips I doubt it. In that case the signal reaching the Philips has degraded too much.

Hmm, cables are only 2M long. Could they really be a factor?

Re: Toslink to Philips HTS3568 via splitter

I have recommended the one at audiovisualonline to countless folks on here and I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with it. However, sometimes they ignore the advice and get one from ebay/amazon "coz it's cheaper" and then.......

As above, keep the cables as short as possible when using optical switches/splitters and if you can get decent optical cables too, no need to spend a fortune, I've found the fisual pro at £5 to be good quality. I have a £3 one from amazon and while it works perfectly well, it's a bit flimsy and it wouldn't surprise me if it had problems when hooked up to a switch. You pays yer money etc.

Each is 2m long? If so, 4m in total with splitter in the middle which is quite a trek?

Put it this way, when I tried using a splitter in reverse, as a "Combiner" for 2:1. initially it wouldn't work. Substituted the combiner to amp lead with a short 0.5m lead and it worked.

There is no guarantee that it will work and I wouldn't suggest you going out to buy shorter leads to try. Its probably a case of your Philips Optical In is fussier about signal strength than perhaps another brand of amp.

Its all a bit of a lottery, a higher priced switch will possibly give less degradation and a higher chance of working with your current leads & the Philips.
