Question Digital Audio Cable Join

By reading through this forum, most of my questions have been answered
Just 2 remain.

My (old) Pioneer Surround amp has a single optical audio input. Can I use a splitter/joiner connector so that AZbox and Bluray can share this optical audio input?

The Pioneer amp is old now and I am looking to get a new amp with HDMI input. However, I dont understand how I can connect (thru HDMI) to both TV and surround AMP with a single cable coming from my bluray player.
Do I split the output at source (back of bluray player)?

TIA

OK, I think I can answer this second part as I have just read a davepuma response to another query. I use the new amp as a loop-thru

Yep, most amps have several HDMI inputs and one (or two) outputs - so you just feed all your HDMI enabled equipment to the TV via the amp.

Optical switches are designed for this situation, so one of them would solve your problem. It may also be possible to get away with a splitter (used in reverse of course), but only if the optical connections on your equipment are deactivated when the devices are put into standby.

The most common splitter you see at places like Maplin is a 3-way manual one, which is relatively cheap. You can spend more on higher quality ones, but probably not a good idea if you're already planning on upgrading the amp.

I didn't know they existed but this sounds good. I would prefer the manual option (more control).
Thanks
