Angry onkyo tx-sr606 and sony bdp-s350 setup

I have an Onkyo Tx-sr606 and Sony bdp-s350 connected over Hdmi. I can play blu-ray movies with no problem, however when putting a DVD in I only hear the audio but I have no image at all. The Sony BR player menu also never displays. When connecting the Sony directly to TV while playing a DVD I do get an image. So I have something not working between the Onkyo and the Sony. Anyone can help, I keep trying different settings but nothing works!?

Connect the Sony to the Onkyo via optical and to the TV via hdmi. Then mute the sound from the TV remote. Did you try that?

Yes that work however I don't think I'm getting True HD or PCM sound thru optical when watching a Bluray. The image is really the issue. And what puzzles me is that others on this forum just hook-up thru HDMI and all works. I might try connecting sony to onkyo via hdmi AND component for image. It's almost like the Onkyo doesn't want to receive non-1080p signal thru HDMI.

Re: onkyo tx-sr606 and sony bdp-s350 setup

I understand. It shouldn't really be happening. As you mentioned via optical you also loose the true-HD soundtrack of bluray. If the problem is really that the receiver needs 1080p then you could send 1080p, regardless of bluray-dvd by changing the video settings from the Bluray player's menu. You also need a display that accepts 1080p as well. Mine for instance only accepts 1080i/720p. Although this could not explain why bluray works and dvd does not.

There is a dedicated onkyo forum here " Onkyo Owners' Forum - AVForums.com ". Maybe you could find some more info or by starting a new thread there someone more qualified will try to help you.

Good luck.
