Lightbulb 55" Samsung on Floating Wall - From Start To Finish

Hey everyone, I actually came across AVForums in the first place because I have been looking for examples of "Floating Walls" and low and behold my search landed me on the first and last place to look - AVF!

I have recently bought a 55" Samsung Series 6 HD LCD TV. It is my pride and joy and currently stands on a 3 tier black glass TV stand (Pictures to follow soon). However! No matter how hard I try, with all the AV equipment connected to the TV, hosted within the glass stand there are so many wires, there is just no hiding them...

So I am on a quest for seamlessness! No wires - no mess - no stress!

After thinking of ways around this conundrum I thought my best bet was to look into the floating wall option and 1 week and many hours contemplating later here I am documenting it every step of the way for you.

I am doing this because of my love for all things AV and mostly because the posts that other members have put on here have been so informative and helpful I thought it would be a good idea to give something back t othe community!

Regarding the images, the room is sort of in 2 parts as you will probably be able to make out from the ongoing photos - so - due to the shape of the room it has been difficult to capture any shots at anything other than unflattering angles! so bare with me if the images look like they are from an odd perspective from time to time.

So, here goes

This will be the wall for the floating wall...

So that is a an overview of the shape of the room, whether you can tell or not but the room is essentially in 2 parts, divided by the "archway" the first part with the Computer set up is dedicated to the use of the computer and playing/recording guitar and music in general - the arch then separates and steps down into the AV section of the room - featuring the 55" Samsung and sofa, coffee table etc.

Any questions along the way i will be happy to - well - try my best to answer!

Lets see what we can do with this wall...

Re: 55" Samsung on Floating Wall - From Start To Finish

So the wall which the TV is to be mounted on and the floating wall be built against is 113 inches wide.

With the 55" TV in the middle that leave 29 inches for a floating wall BUT of course the wall needs to be smaller than the existing wall and have thus decided to make this 94.4 inches wide, exactly the same width as the cabinets to go below (will post images of these soon) giving 9.3 inches of width space between the floating wall and the existing side wall's - just enough to give a nice glow from the rope light i hope you will agree!?

Re: 55" Samsung on Floating Wall - From Start To Finish

Ok so I have been busy buying and building cabinets to go under the Tv for housing all the AV gear and wires etc and also purchased one hell of wall bracket for the TV it was pricey, over £250 but is a bracket one can be pround of! I will post pictures soon, We had guests over the weekend so i built the cabinets and located thme temporarily to make the place look tidy, but this also gave me a good idea of how the room will look when it is completed and where things should be located too!

Don't worry, i know everyone here like pictures so i will update this post with them later tonight, both bracket and cabinet construction and location

Nice looking pair of rooms you have there, I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses. At least a 'floating wall' should hide some of those wires...

Keep those pictures coming...

Consider recessing your items into the wall like >>>THIS<<< before doing a standard floating wall.

Tyler Durden your recessed screen in that awesome wall is.... well .. so awesome ha ha, Yeah man don't get me wrong I would love to do that!
But it's a pretty big undertaking - do you mind if i ask the total cost of this build? Minus the AV equipment of course?

Many thanks

Re: 55" Samsung on Floating Wall - From Start To Finish

Further construction images: Mostly the cabinets and the beast of a bracket.
I got and adjustabel one as opposed to a fixed because it makes for easier acces for adding and adjusting new cables and aplliances etc. Plus if all else fails i can always use the bracket as a coffee table look at the size of it!! ...

Making holes for wires!

The Beast

The alien hanging fro mthe wall

And this is where we are so far! and yes i DID Photoshop out the wires hanging from under the TV just to give myself the idea of how it will look etc
there are in fact about 6 wires hanging from the TV down to the cabinets below - but not soon!

Today i ordered t he MDF boards and tonight i will be going to get the wood for the frame.

Hey man hows it going, yeah the Apple fireplace, it is linked into my home via ethernet to my apple ambiance detector which tells the fireplace to come on or off and at what temperature depending on what the ambience detector picks up the house air condition/temperature to be etc....No i am joking big time - I actually had an Apple sticker lying around so it was begging to be stuck to something so it got whacked central on the granite! But if Apple did do fire places i'm sure they would be cool! or hot - excuse the reverse pun

Yeha ou should start a thread you get plenty of help and idead I have noticed

Re: 55" Samsung on Floating Wall - From Start To Finish

I had trouble getting my Mac through surround sound recently especially because I have optical leads for both the PS3 & 360 hooked up to 5.1 i wanted to get rid of the harmon kardons and put the mac through the sourrond sound as well but still use 5.1 for downloaded films etc. Scratching my head I ended up speaking to some guys at AWD-IT.co.uk they told me what i didnt know, that infact the Mac Mini has an optical out in the 3.5mm jack it's just recssed! so I bought a few more optical leads off them as well as a 3 in 1 optical splitter allowing for all of the hardware to run on 5.1 with the flick of a button! If you arent an Apple guy and i realize many of you are not AWD-IT offered me a pretty sweet looking set up dedicated to media centers etc. I am a bit of a Mac head so had already bought the Mini before the TV even! So that wasnt the route i went down but there were some pretty slick set ups there worth a look.

After setting up the Mac i realized i hadn't anywhere near enough space for all my Films so shopped around for an external hard drive to hold thme all.
I ended up with a 2TB Lacie again from AWD-IT - they sorted me out with the best price even though it was quite a wad!

Anyway Ropelight ordered today too, should be coming tomorrow and the MDF arrived earlier for the actaul wall part of the floating wall Good times ahead! As well as many a picture soon too.
