Automated Cinema/Games room with a difference

I have finaly got round to starting my cinema room.
My goal is to have a room that will be for movies and gaming and has to be easy to use. One touch operation to control lights, projector, Screen, TV, amplifier etc. i also wanted it to be different in terms of looks.
I have been playing around with lighting control system, media server and amplifier. I have finaly manager to get the equipment talking to each just needs tweeking.
Constuction of the room has started and i will keep you posted with pics.
Sorry for the quality of the pics, they were taken with my phone.

5*'d this thread for you, really liking the look of it so far. Keep up updated, can't wait to see it finished.

What exactly is the idea of the new plastered section? Your ideas behind it?

Cheers,

Re: Automated Cinema/Games room with a difference

the new section was made to house the projector, screen and lights.
I wanted all the equipment to be hidden. The section that comes down the wall will continue along the wall and then back on itself.
i have attached a quick mock up of the shelf.

with screen down.

All the cables run into a cupboard in the garage so the amp(equipment) can go as show above or in the cupboard in the garage
i will get some more pics of the lights in the room

Re: Automated Cinema/Games room with a difference

This looks quite unique, I look forward to seeing the finished product.

For my own education, why did you use metal and not timber for the structure that runs around the ceiling and then down?

Re: Automated Cinema/Games room with a difference

Here is a pic of the lighting and screen control system.

This is also linked to my onkyo 905 and automaticaly changes the output from plazma to projector when the screen is lowered.
The Onkyo zones are linked to the kitchen and main living area aswell as the games room.
Other equipment i have:
PS3, Xbox360, Media PC, Sky+(upgrading to Sky HD) the control system is also linked to the home security system. one of the fetures is that all the Lights and AV equipment is swithed off when the alarm is armed

I used the metal (same as used in stud walls) as it was cheaper to use and was lighter. also i found it quite difficult to get timber that was perfectly straight. the metel bits were cut using tin snips and the just sloted together and then fixed with screws.
the lower section that comes down the wall and holds the equipment will all be made from wood as this is much stronger to hold the weight of the equipment.
i have never done anything like this before so most of it is experimental. I am trying things out in this room before i tackel the main living area.

Nice to see something different being done, nice original idea for the front of the room. I like how all the equipment control is linked too. Will keep my eye on this, should be a great room

Re: Automated Cinema/Games room with a difference

Excellent idea... Well done fella.

I especially like the curved corners.

Can I be cheeky? If you get time, would you take a few close up pictures showing the curved corners so I can see how you've finished them?

I'm thinking of doing something similar & I'm interested to know what materials you used to achieve this look. Additionally, when you curved the plasterboard, did you 'dampen it down' on one side or put small cuts in the back face?

All info gratefully received...

Thanks,

SL...

When we removed some old plaster from a curved section of our victorian staircase our joiner scored the the plasterboard (finish side) so it would bend round the corner then plastered over the top.

Thanks for the tip!

I'm trying to determine the limit of the materials I can use for my next refurb. Once I know 'how far' I can push plaster rendering then I get to finalise my blueprint.

Anyone else had experience of creating moulded plaster components within their AV build???

Cheers,

SL...
