Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

I am considering relocating my plasma to be mounted over the fireplace, see attached pic for reference. The fireplace is around 65" wide, and the top of the mantle is roughly 49.5" from the ground.

I would be interested to see any pictures from those of you who have such a set-up, and what it looks like given the current plan is for the open coal fire to remain. I'd also be interested in how you manage a surround sound set-up in this situation, specifically with regard to the center speaker?

I've seen lots of fake chimneys, etc. on here which look fab, however not to many with an open fire still in play.

I'd appreciate any pics, and opinions.

Many thanks for reading,
Eddie

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

Eddie,

We have an old cottage and actually had a fireplace put in a few months ago with the premise that I would put a 46" TV on the wall above it. We had it built as low, deep and wide enough (H1020 x D270) to take a 46" TV. I have done much research and it hasn't been easy to get the right setup decided on.

I want the TV to have a plaster board surround so that it has that built in appearance and to have the TV as low and close to the mantel piece meant that a centre speaker would be difficult to locate without raising the TV (see the pencil marks on the wall in the pic meaning the TV is currently sitting too high). I have gone for B&W's LCR7's for the front 3 channels. This means that the centre speaker will have to sit above the TV. Either that or it was going to have to be a B&W CCM80 in the ceiling as a centre. I have gone for the LCR7 centre above the TV.
This article convinced me this might work... http://www.homecinemachoice.com/Inst...ealth+cinema+3

Either side of the fireplace will be another LCR7 and the rears will be 2 (possibly 3 in a 6.1) B&W CCM80's put into the ceiling.

Again, due to depths of TV's, I was going to go for a Sony 46x4500, but it is a very deep TV and won't give me the look I. I am now very interested in Samsung's new 'top of the range' 8000 Series 46" LED/LCD TV's which are very, very thin.

The work commences in the next 3-4 weeks. The pic shows what I have to work with.

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

I've installed ours above the sofa:

The reasoning behind this was to allow us to fit two sofas in the room. It's normally just the two of us but if we have friends over we can sit and chat.

All the gubbins such as the amp etc are located on a homemade rack under the stairs.

Sometimes I feel it could do with being slightly lower but most of the time it's fine. It was also the best way of using all the space we have!

Hopefully it should all be finished by the end of the month - I've just finished fitting all new skirting boards and i'm in the process of getting ready to paint them this weekend. Once they're done it's time for the new carpet (just before baby arrives!)

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

Thanks Guys.

I guess my main concerns would be the height the TV would be at, and with regard to speaker placement specifically the center. I did consider ceiling speakers but my daughters bedroom is directly above, so not sure how that might work out.

Anyone else any examples of what you've done ?

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

We are in a rented house at the moment but, because of the layout of the room, the best place for the tv was above the large fireplace.

I have mounted the speakers on the wall too and put all the cabling in trunking to keep the amount of holes I have to fill in to a minimum when we leave.

Where did yu get those TV benches from (link) and also are there holes in the back for the wires to come out? Cheers.
Edit: is it available in black?

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

I was just lurking the forums for something similar as i do not want my plasma to high, i really wanted it pretty low for the best viewing height.

The solution i come up with for the fireplace was to buy the "metro slim line" from here

without a surround and place is pretty low so it should leave enough room for a reasonable centre speaker and plasma height, the only thing i am unsure about is the heat coming from the fire damaging the plasma, which i will have to look in to a bit more.

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

Do you know why it says up to 25" at all mate? (sorry to hijack topic but I love this bench)

Does it have holes in the back for wires to come out?

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

As LittleJay says, it is the Lack TV Unit. There are a few Lack items at Ikea so you have to be sure you are looking at the right one.

The back is open like at the ront for all the wires to go through

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

I had the same problem, the best place for my TV and screen was above my fireplace. I decided to build a studded wall to make the TV flush, I also built a housing for my AV equipment. Not finished yet but not to far away.

Pics :

Before

After

To do :
1)mantle piece, (wood or marble)
2)Paint speakers andspeaker covers
3)Build HTPC
4)Get sky HD
5)Finish Coving
6)Paint under mantle piece

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

we have a 3 meter wide inglenook with open fire, the beam above looks like the same height as your chimney. we have tried the option but are now considerin an eletrical screen that can come down more, since the TB on that height is really not comfortable.
This option for us is complicaying things with converting imputs from scarts etc... hence my questions on this website, but if we can pull it off , we will have overcome the height issue.
I would suggest you try putting your TV on an elevated stand for a few weeks to see if you like that height before making drastic desisions.
regarding the heat... you could choose a movable bracket that leaves more ventilation, but realistically , if you have the fire lit, heat and dustparticals will in time take their toll. Depends all on how much kalories your fire puts out. Try checking the heat on the chimney breast with a thermometer.
Hope that helps

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

I'm considering hanging my 40" LCD above the fireplace too. Thing is the screen would be too high up above the current fireplace as the room isn't big enough

Has Anyone managed to find any contemporary styled fireplace's that are quite low and wide?, then I'd be able to have the screen lower down.

I could only find this one but it's £2000

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

HI, there is another solution, perhaps a lot cheaper than you think.
It will need some research.
Some companies sell brackets for TV's that slide up and down.
I remember seeing one when I was looking for a wall mount for my projector.
Like you I found the height above the fire uncomfortable. I installed a 100 inch electric screen and a projector. ( Home theatre)
during this process I came to several websites on google that sell wall mounts for TVs. have a good look. the prices are not even close to what you would expect. ( £200-400 ) Look for motorised Wall mounts, or electrical wall mounts.
Have a look at AV4Home | LCD wall mounts | Plasma mounting brackets | Projector wall brackets | Home cinema furniture UK | TV Furniture | Vogels Wall Mounts
PS: be careful , some mounts are not suitable above fireplaces because of the enormous weight they have to bear and the required space for the movement.
Hope this helps.

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

Spent the last few months looking at fireplaces for our new dedicated TV room. Got a lot of helpful advice from Fireplaces UK | Gas Fires, Electric Fires & Stoves - Hotprice.co.uk about gas fires below TV's

I think the only style of fireplace that really suits a TV above is a hole-in-the-wall style fireplace. These are usually 300-400mm from floor level and allow the TV to be installed at a decent height for viewing - this is the one I wanted:

It's basically just a gas fire the gets set inside the chimney. It's also remote control! These style of fires offer minimal heat output also so they're unlikely to cause any issues regarding damage to the TV.

Re: TRIXXY, I was looking at the same fireplace as you've mentioned above (Gavin Scott Design Vista) and was quoted less than you mentioned here:
Gavin Scott Design Vista Gas Fireplace - Hotprice.co.uk

Sadly, after many months of debating which fireplace to go for our fitter advised us that we would be unable to have a gas fire due to the state of our chimney

We ended up with an electric fire that just plugs in and you can have the effect without having to have the heater on - still looks good and has saved a bit to help go towards the projector

Re: Mount TV over Open Fireplace - Examples Please !

Yeah, I am also now considering possibly just using an electric fire, which should hopefully then allow me to remove the mantle and surround to something smaller, or perhpaps just a shelf above of some kind thereby allowing me to lower the position of the TV on the wall.

More thought needed..........
