ok. I was going to show you my sketches of my design plans for my screen that i am about to build. But they were naff so i have gone one better.
please leave coments.

the one piece frame is to be made from mdf, covered in a black felt material. The veiwing screen is bordered by small skirting board frame(this frame is also to be covered by black felt. It's grey just for visuals) the screen is going to be matt white fabric from drh about £40. as you can see there is a section cut out to place the center speaker.

The feet will be made from 2b4 and cut to shape. These will probable be covered in fabic as well. They have a slot for the screen to fit into and a bolt to secure the screen.

A final look at the screen.
I created the images in 3dsmax
i didnt want a hang down screen. and it may not be practical but it looks good.
I will prob add some DTs and DD placs to the front

If anyone want to see what their intended cinema room will look like in 3d space. just send me the detail's. i.e measurment equipment and i will see what i can do.
I need the practice as i am on my last year of uni, and i am sopposed to get a job in Computer games next year.

That looks like a good idea, my brother is a final year uni student too he does stuff in max, nothing as good as that though. I will have to get him to mock up my new HC that im planning in a custom room/extension.

what size is that screen, i assume you plan to front project.

Maybe attaching it to the cieling above rather than the wall behind might offer more stability? How heavy do you think it will be?

Are you converting an attic space? If so don't forget to reinforce the floor - my mate stuck his foot throught his attic floor the other day

the attic has already been converted.
The room is about done apart from the screen. If you search the diy forum for "results so far" you can see my actual room.(with naff TV)
The size of the screen will be dependant on the throw of the sony hs20.
I also thought about putting a sopport rope to the ceiling but with the increased size of the feet to the rear theres no chance of it falling backward and with the rope behind, there is no chance of it falling forward and it keeps the rope/chain out of view

Just one thing, insted of using rope why not use an iron bar or similar instead, at least that would ensure stability front and back.

i had thought of using a bar or somthing. it may not be as flexible when fitting to the wall as rope would be. But i soppose it would provide more stability for the screen. especialy when my pardigm get going.. Just found out the rough hs20 throw.
looks like it is going to be an 80inch screen.
and the projecter will be on the back wall.

looks like a good size, i think my HC will have a fixed screen rather than pull down.
my bro is do 3rd year of a Multimedia degree. He spends time building websites doing animations and shooting films oh and loads of max, all on tax payers moeny. I think im bitter cos i did mine a few years ago and the onyl PC;s we had were win311 and it was a ****e course in comparison, by the sounds of it he does all the stuff i enjoy doing when im not working. I guess he want to go in visual effects film anomation stuff at some point

it only takes about an hour.
and any other furniture can be added i.e. couches, tables, posters, doors, rugs.
i can even give you a movie, of a fly through.

just to let you all know the building of my screen will comence next week.
i will post pics of the work in progress and finished artical including screen shots when the projecter turns up

oh yea. im going to build the frame board out of two sections instead of one. so its easyer to get up stairs and so i can use stronger thicker wood.

well at the moment its looking like a z2 but if i can get enough hours in i may get a hs20, but im going to see what everyone thinks of the z2 once the hype dies down

have decided on sizes and material

It going to be a 85inch screen
189cm width
106cm hight

The boarder board will be 7 cm skirting board
2x203cm strips 4 the length
2x120cm strips 4 the hight

The mdf back board will be in two section
2x 45inch by 41inch

The screen fabric from drh is costing £65

ill also need about a meter of dowl for the rear sopports
10x fastening plates, black fabric for the bottom section,
4x 10cm bolts & wingnuts and 4x 30cm 2b4 for the feet.

ok, just bought material form b&q, got everything i needed, but was a little ****** of with the one of their guys. i got one of the 8ft by 4 ft boards of mdf, and aked him to cut it so that i could have two sections that were at 145cm by 97
well he f'd it up didn't he, and i didnt notice till i got the bits home.
should have just asked him to cut it in half and i could have cut it to size myself. i have ended up with one section 145-97 as i asked, and the other 97-120. so with the bits left over, i am going to be able to do a repair job, but its not quite what i was after.
word of warning to anyone that want wood pre cut from a diy store, do it yourself, (DIY) as long as you can fit it in the car.

ok so the first thing i had to do, is fix what the guy from b&Q did.
So this photo shows the three parts repaired, so that they are in two part.
the space for the center speaker has been cut and the area's for the screen and edgeing have been marked,
if you look at the right corner you can see the plates i have used to attach the sections together.

ok, now the two sections have been attached with plates front and back and i have covered the bottom section below the screen with black fabric.
Tonight i have also cut and shaped the edges and covered them in black fabric,
Tomorow night im going to place the screen fabric, and attach the borders. Hopefully i will also make a start to the feet altho i'm sure they are going to give me some jip.

What method did you use to cover them? glue or staples? I had a go at mine but failed big time

i use good old stapels.

Tonight i have attached my screen fabric and screwed on the boarders. I have also decided that im going to have to paint my celing and door as they give of to much reflected light.
mind you, the 4 large bright white pictures on the walls don't help much.

I converted my loft (not as well as yours though), and glued black carpet to the rear wall, grey carpet to the lower walls, and painted the upper walls and ceiling with Kodak 18% grey - Dulux 6000n if you want it mixed. That makes a big difference to reflected light.

I made a screen from a frame and stretched/stapled the fabric to it, then hung it on the wall. Only the speakers are at the front, and all the equipment at the rear so I had shorter cables to the projector.

painted black and shaped with my trusty £10 jig from argos.
(its amazing how much stuff that jig saw has done)
