Floating Wall - Battoning and materials query

Hi,

Well im a bout to start getting the bits together to build my floating wall but just want to ask a couple of questions to anyone who has done it or knows about wood

Firstly - the battening - what kind of wood, what size and where from

Secondly - the main wall bit - from what ive read i have decided to opt for the more time consuming but probably harder wearing option of MDF - again really - what width is best to go for ? Will the thin stuff be ok as its not load bearing - and can you buy it in HUGE size rather than got to the hassle of fitting several pieces together.

Finally - whats the best way to finish the mdf - how do you get a good paint finish etc.

Once again, cheers for any replies and advice,

Dave

Am somewhat also interested in answers on this, and would be interested to know what fixings are also used.

Timbers can be sourced from your local timber yard or a DIY store like Wickes or B&Q. The dimensions depends on how much you want to bring the wall out, but I'd imagine you'll be looking at a 2" depth at least.

If you have brick walls around this floating wall, you could use hammer fixings to secure the structure to it, as well as the head [ceiling] and sole [floor] plates.

Do you intend on plaster boarding your wall before the MDF?
