Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but I have just borrowed a Makita metal/wire/stud detector from someone and I dont have the faintest idea how to use it

I need it to find somewhere suitable in the living room ceiling for a projector mount and a manual projector screen.

I have the detector set to find studs but it seems to be beeping pretty much all the time?

Cany anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or if there are any on-line instructions for this things.

Your doing nothing wrong, the detectors are a waste of space I have tried using one and ended up taking it back for a refund.
You are better off using a very fine screwdriver and putting holes in the ceiling to find the joists. Once you have found one they will be around 16" centres or 400mm.

i had one, and if the power socket on the wall i was testing was switched on id get millions of false beeps, as soon as i turned the wall sockets off on the wall it worked fine.

Same here, worked fine once the electricity was off (the meter was on the same wall).

Thanks for the replies. Kind of figured it was not that great a peice of kit as I seemed to be getting beeps all the time....even if it was knowere near the wall!

I ended uyp sorting it last night though. was giving the stud detector another rty and, in between all the random beeps, there was one area in the right vacinity where I wanted to mount the projector that kept giving a beep.

I took the detector away and gave the ceiling a gentle tap in that area to see if it sounded different......and about two inches to the left a couple of the nails holding the plasterboard to a stud popped straight out.

So, thanks to the shoddy build quality on new builds, all I needed to find a stud was my fist :-D
