moving a bt phone ocket - how easy ?

hi all - as title really, how easy is it to move a bt phone socket ?

the one we have is abot 20 yr ld and in completely the wrong place

Hi there

As far as i'm aware, when i tried to move mine several years ago it's illegal to tamper with the socket if it's the BT Master socket , not sure if it still hold true today.

I's not difficult at all, you just need the right tools. try this website as a quick guide: -
UK_telephone/uk_telephone.html

you only really need two wires if it's for normal telephone use but put them all in just in case.

Very, and I'm colour blind, it's only wires and only 3 but we actually only use 2 as the third wire was for some external ringing ancient thing that BT no longer use, it depends on where you are going to move it though I suppose, the BT wire (coming into house) isn't very flexible but we moved ours from the window to the front door and are about to move it to the loft) and distribute from there, the BT wire is attached to the eaves anyway so easy to re route to loft and no ugly wires trailing down front of house.

Yes it is illegal to tamper with the 'BT Master socket' but in what way is a mystery and don't think anyone has ever been prosecuted for it

and sssssssh we wont tell....

If you tamper and get it wrong BT charge about £150 to sort it out

well the problem i have is where my bt master socket is at the mo is very shortly gonna be covered in plaster board so what options do i have ?

I could just run an extension cable from it but how will that effect plugging in a modem etc ?

LOL. Had an operator at the India based call centre tell me to take the socket off the wall once when I had a broadband connection problem.

It depends, can't you just remount the MS when the work has been done, and where does the MS need to be, as I've said below, ours comes into hallway into a small junction box then onto MS about 2 feet away and from the MS we have an extension that is hard wired into MS and goes to living room (Modem is plugged directly into that ext) and the phone in the hall is plugged into the normal telephone socket on Micro Filter.

It did come through living room window frame when we moved in (BT don't have long drills

) but we moved it to where it is now by just drilling the wall and moving external BT wire about 10 ft and into junction box.

We will be moving it soon to the loft, so will just move the external BT wire up through eaves and rewire to suit our needs.

To be honest there's not much to go wrong really, (although not saying it doesn't) our BT cable comes in through the wall by the front door to a junction box then on to the Master Socket, all colour matched, then in the MS there are 3 wires (ours now only uses 2).

Me too, once by an ISP when I had a dodgy connection.

The thing is if you know what your doing you can move them, I do it all the time relocate MS to plant/AV rooms and fit filtered outlets, its not difficult. But if you get it wrong there is a hefty bill to pay if your doing building work its worth phoning BT and asking how much they would charge to do it for you. Then decide if it's worth the risk. If you do make a joint ensure it is accessible in future.
