Question Attic conversion

guys trying to convince my mum to let me convert the attic how much would a 1080p projector be (on an 80" screen)

also what needs to be done to attic is currently just beams of wood

im thinking just insulate between beams and plasterboard over it then actually plaster walls and ceiling. Install window and electrics etc

Re: Attic conversion

I think a bit more information is needed. Budget? Sources? Im assuming youre not just planning on the projector with nothing to put through it? I think there are probably a number of building regulations you need to consider as it will be turning into a living space. Probably not as simple as you first think

well once its all completed ill have the projector plugged up to ps3, sky hd and sony 5.1
will be using it for games blu-rays/dvds and tv. will then be getting a 7.1 amp and a couple of extra speakers.will try and get up there and measure up so i can make a sketchup of it. Who would check the attic, a builder? if so I know one. Will prob put a window in there do i just call and ask the council? already have sky+hd so will need to reroute the cables, was going to do the garage but is not attatched to the house so internet was an issue. and would only been about 6'3" high.anyone know the cost of raw materials and what i will need(not quantities) just how much for a certain length/are etc
next upgrade will be nothing if i stay in my 2m x 2.5m bedroom as there is no point lol

Want to keep costs as low as possible as im only 14.

Was looking at an optoma hd800x or sanyo PLV Z 700 both under 1k

Depending on the construction it will normally need extra support and insulation. If you want a full conversion to another legal room then everything will need to be done to building regs and it I would imagine you are looking at 5-10K min.

Even if you go for a basic DIY option I dont think you would have much change from 2K as you will still need to ensure that it can take the weight of what you are planning and you will want to make sure that it is insulated to protect all your equipment.

Re: Attic conversion

addyjones1234,

Big job for a 14 year old.

First thing is, no one anywhere can explain to you what type of construction or modifications will be involved with out actually seeing the property. We can guess based on experience, but even that is not enough to trust.

You have to consider that you may be installing additional weight into an area that will not support additional weight. This can lead to structural failure/collapse of the building.

Also, electrical is a must. It will be needed to run your equipment and the HVAC ,such as it may be, in your area.

This means that either you:
1. tap into your existing hvac system(not always recommended)
2. Install a new unit.

But the electrical part of it is also required. No extension cords here buddy, sorry.

I would advise you to talk to someone with some experience and age that can help you to understand your local codes, building requirements and all the things involved on a local level.

Good luck,

Brien

Re: Attic conversion

Is that bob the builder?

It might be cheaper for your parents to buy you a lifetime cinema pass. Seriously thought this is an ambitious project for a 14 year old, good luck.
