Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

Hi

Can anyone answer this for me that's maybe done this themselves?

I have decided to run an ethernet cable from the router in the bedroom to the PS3 in the lounge. This means that I would need to drill out the bedroom wall, have the cable running down the outside of the house and into the lounge directly underneath.

The thing i'm worried about is that my drill is only capable of taking up to 13mm masonry. Would this be big enough, or will I have to buy a new drill as well? I also don't know if this means that the chuck can only hold 13mm drill bits or lower, or it can hold a higher mm, just doesn't recommend it.

Cheers
Gordie

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

I needed to use an SDS to go through my walls (fortunately the old man had a decent hilti for the job).

I doubt you will go through the wall with the drill you are describing.

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

If you are prepared to crimp on the plugs, you will only need approx 8mm holes.

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

Although SDS is a better type of drill you can get a large drill bit to fit your standard drill, hopefully it has a hammer action.
This should do the job as it looks as though it is tappered to a smaller size to fit your drill. Masonry Drill 16 x 400mm - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys
DO CHECK.
Also I assume you intend to use a ready made RJ45 cable, if so cover the plugs with clingfilm before passing through the drilled hole.

Thanks for that Andy. That looks exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the cling film tip as well.

In fact

If there was a way I could join 2 10m cables together instead of buying a 15 - 20m one, I would just run it underneath the carpets.

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

if you terminate both ends you can get female to female couplers. however they are bulky and would make a noticeable lump under your carpet.
no chance of hiding behind the skirting?

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

I was told cat5 shouldn't be used on the house exterior. However it didn't stop me running it from the downstairs router, out the house, around 2 sides and up into the spare room.

Never had an issue either. Just try and buy some brown or dark cable so it doesn't stand out too much.

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

I've put my router in the lounge and where the BT master socket is and used homeplugs to connect to a switch in an upstairs bedroom where my 2 pcs and NAS are connected. My PS3 is normally located in the bedroom above the lounge and gets a very good wireless signal or in the lounge where I connect via Cat5. I also have a media centre PC and Wii in the lounge. This is certainly a lot less hassle than having to drill through exterior walls.

The homeplugs are more than fast enough to for the upstairs PCs when on the internet. We only get a rubbish 1.8mbps speed from our house.

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

dont use SDS as you will get blast out on the other side of the brick when you breakthrough. I work for Bosch so i am pretty experienced on this stuff.
Use a normal percusion bit and you will be fine mate, aerial installers use these bits as SDS makes a nasty mess when drilling.

When I got Sky installed, they drilled from inside to out and when they went away, I had a look at what they had done and noticed that half the brick was missing where the cable came out.

I should have inspected all work before I signed their worsheet off.

You must have got the same installer I had. Looked like an exit wound from an SA-80 on the outside of the house. God knows why he didn't just re-use the existing hole for the second cable run, it was plenty big enough and nicely covered with a protection cover too.

Re: Anyone know drill bit size - Ethernet Cable?

That doesnt surprise me, you can get SDS anti breakout bits but they are very expensive. Just use a quality percusion bit and a good hammer action drill and you will not have the break out.
My plumber did it and i wasnt pleased when i came back from work.

And Please use Bosch bits

Get the right cable

Remember to get ethernet cable that's suitable for outside use. I notice that ebay has external cat6 for sale at god prices.

Thats what you call old thread revival. Outside cable is usually black as the PVC is less affected by sunlight than other colours.

I always bag cables when installing as a first fix, especially stuff you can't re-terminate easily like HDMI.

Out of interest how are you sealing around the hole? If youve shoved a cable through it wont be weather tight will it?

I used this method when joining 2 pieces of oak together. Brushed abit of wood glue into the groove and covered with oak dust. Vanished...... :-)
