New SetUp - In the bedroom

Hi

Im pretty new to this forum and have just kick started my new project.

I recently purchased:

Pioneer LX-5090 Plasma
Onkyo 876 AV Amp
B&W MT30 surround sound speakers
QED Silver Anniversary speaker cable
QED Reference HDMI cables
Popcorn Hour A-110 Media Tank
Drobo 4TB NAS

Ive emptied out the bedroom where all of this equipment is going into and started building the false chimney.

Ive also started chasing the wall, where all the cables will be run and where all the new sockets will go.

I will put the plastic conduit into the wall and cover them back up again.

Im not re-plastering the room as its already been done a few years back.

I wanted to ask all you experts out there what is the best way to re-fill the holes/gaps which I have made in the wall due to running all the new conduit. I dont want to use pollyfilla as you can all ways see it even when painted.

Heres the first installment of pictures.

Any other advise and tips you guys can give.

Hi

Just wanted to find out if there is any one out there who can advise me what the best way is to fill the holes/gaps where I have chased the wall and put the conduit in.

I dont want to use Pollyfilla as even when painted you can see the stuff, should I use plaster to cover those gaps and then sand it down.

Any tips

Some nice equipment you have there to fill your room. Keep us posted on the project

As for filling the conduit runs, use bodyfiller for cars, Davids P38 or Topstop Gold, they are 2 part mixes but allow some flex and give an excellent finish. You will be able to pick these up at Halfords easily. One thing to watch out for is after you've applied it and it has set (about 1hr before you can sand it) you may see some pin holes, not an issue just mix up some more and fill. If the holes are literally minute then your emulsion should fill these.

use bonding to fill the gap to start with blade it off flat and leave to dry. once dry it will have shruck back a bit, then get some easy fill from a builders merchants or dry lining supplies and fill over again, its a really fine filler and sands up a treat ,once done you should not see any sign of it. remember you live in a house not a car lol.

Car filler or easy fill.

Hmmmmm, all I want is the gap to be filled, repainted with out anyone noticing the gap or line.

I normally use pollyfilla or any of the other brands but Ive notived over the last few months when I have used pollyfilla I can always see the line still there as the paint doest blend in with the filla.

With the Car filler, Ive read alot of forums and most people have used this on MDF or wood materials, havent come across anyone using it on the exisiting plaster wall.

Easy fill or Wickes filler powder. The premixed ones go off way too hard. Alot of getting the hole to disappear is in the sanding!

That's because most people would use a powder filler or bonding for walls. If you take your time and use a flat edge such as an engineers steel rule or a plastering float you shouldn't run into problems. I think you can also get some ready mix plaster.

To cover your lines which pollyfilla leaves, treat it like new plaster... mix some water into your emulsion and let it dry, then 2/3 coats depending on the colour will cover it, you wont see a line!

trust me, use easy fill when its rubbed down it leaves no lines we use it all the time making good.

Thanks for all the feedback

Just had a thought. I will be calling the plasterer in to plaster the false chimney breast. Should I get him to plaster the holes/gaps or wall chases that I have made. Or should I go for the EasyFill option.

Which ever product is better in covering up the gaps as well as not seeing it once painted.

Don't dismiss Polycell's Smoothover. Really easy to work with and sands a beaut too.

get plasterer to do it then if you are not happy with it you can spread some easy fill over the top then sand it up.

I've just filled my chasing with Wickes Multipurpose filler, and was going to finish with Smoothover. The filler was (was!) only 1cm thick but it's slowly oozed out, taking an absolute age to go off.

It's now 48 hours since application and parts of it is still as soft as cold mash potato. Basically, avoid Wickes own brand products imo. Quick drying it says. Riiiight.

Wow, good thing I didnt go for that product.

I went for the Easyfill option. Havent had a chance to use it as been fixing the frame.

The chimney frame was 5cm too much to the right and the Plasma screen bracket by Vogels, the base was only about 5cm wide so I couldnt move it unless I moved the whole frame.

I had to order a new wider frame, i.e. the one in your pics so that it give me more bandwidth to move the screen into the right place without moving the frame.

Bracket came through today so will get a move on tomorrow and hopefully have some pics with Easyfill over the weekend.
