Floating wall advice and opinions

Hi Everyone

Ok we want to mount a flat screen onto the wall above the gas fire (dont worry the gas fire is very rarely used! Just there to look nice! )

Anyway we thought it would like nice if we created a floating wall to add a feature to the room.

I was just wondering if you lot could have a look at the pictures and give your opinions on the best way to go around this or if anyone is good with one of these design programs

The fire comes out 15.5cm so we were thinking create a floting wall and have the TV and Fire set into the the wall so its all flush leaving a border round the edges of the fire and the tv.

We were thinking of having the cables drop down to the left of the tv and come out at the bottom of the fake wall where we will have a cabinet for the av equipment (Where the exisiting tv is now)

Here are some measurements to help

The height of the wall is 244cm

The fire is 90x69.1x15.5
The depth between the wall and the black border of the fire is 4.5cm

The Tv 37" samsung is 91.6x59.7x9.7

Thanks for your help

Re: Floating wall advice and opinions

Kind of along the same lines as you, I had to mount my TV above a radiator (probably in use a bit more than your fire, but turned right down with the other one in the room on high), but have a look at my thread and see what you think
http://www.avforums.com/forums/home-...a-project.html

Looking at your wall, I'd take a centre measurement of the fire and use that as the centre line for your floating wall, and have equal distance of wall either side of that centre line, with the 'legs' of the wall running down either side of the fireplace. However, your fireplace is quite deep (15.5cms) and I think if you're looking at bringing the edge of the floating wall out that much, it's likely to look odd, so you'll probably find you still have some of the fire sticking out. (I used 34mm batons and 12mm MDF so not even 50mm deep. You can obviously get thicker batons, but would need to consider how the gap behind the wall that is visible at the side will look.)

I'd certainly look at having at least 20cms either side of you TV, especially if you're thinking about rope lighting - won't take too much away from the screen/picture, so an overall width for the floating bit of 131.6. As for the height, that's up to you. It will obviously be down to floor/skirting level, but leave a reasonable gap at the top to give the wall the effect you're after.

You'll be ok in concealing your wires as your wall will be at floor level, so just a question of either running trunking along skirting or replacing that section of skirting with a cable concealing version, or if you're unit is wide enough, they'll just run straight into the back of it.

Just a few of my thoughts for you to mull over!!! If you need any advice, I'll be happy to offer what little I have!!!!!

Good luck, let us have some more pics.

Greg

Re: Floating wall advice and opinions

Thanks for your reply and ideas yours is looking wicked!

I think i described it a bit wrong as a floating wall!!! Its more like a fake chimney going from floor to ceiling! As for the depth it will be boxed in at the sides with MDF and the gaps plastered and sanded etc.

Unfortunatley the fire is off centre to the middle of the room to the left as its a long room with a dining table to the right in the picture. I think this is fine though it looks fine now with the fire off centre and this wall will give it more definition to create 2 seperate areas in the room living and dining.

The only thing that is annoying me is the hearth at the bottom, we cant get rid of it way too much effort so thinking of either painting it with some tile paint black or tile over it with slate, somthing along those lines! Then the missus can put stuff on it like candles and all the crap

Im not sure why im worring about it really its one of the missus's whos a carpenter thats doing it for us

Do have a couple of questions though

How do these brackets work for mounting the TV? is it case of screwing the bracket to the wall attaching some kind of hooks on the back of the tv and the tv literally hooks onto the bracket?

The reason i ask is i want to be able to easily take the tv off if i need to drop another cable down the back of the fake wall. Can you explain how this works?

Thanks

Re: Floating wall advice and opinions

Not sure if I misunderstood your post, but the fake breast sounds good.

The bracket will attach to the wall, and you the get two 'arms' that attach to the back of the TV with hooks on, and you then hook the TV to the mount (not sure if swivel mounts do the same). Very easy to remove and replace.
The only concern I'd have is that you get enough strength from the false chimney breast to support the TV. Alternatively, make a false surround around the fire, and reduce the depth of it above the fire and attach your bracket directly to the wall.

LOL no you didnt misunderstand just my crap describing!

Not sure how it will work yet but we want the tv set into the fake wall like the fire so if we bring the wall out to the same distance as the fire making them flush. We just need to work out if we neeed to add anything to the depth of the TV + the depth of the bracket to bring it out to the same depth of the wall and fire to make it all flush! This is where the missus friend comes in its his job to work out how to do that and how to attach it to the wall securely!

Basically somthing like this but building around the existing fire

Re: Floating wall advice and opinions

Looks good, and your Mrs's friend should be best able to advise you on how to mount your TV securely, but if you use thick enough batons, and enough of them, you should get the strength you're looking for it to be safe.
Good luck

Re: Floating wall advice and opinions

I would say the chimney breast idea would look great. But if you did want to do a floating wall, I would probably do it on a smaller scale to most. Ie smaller piece of MDF to act as a nice surround to the tv rather than apear large enough to be a wall. With the timber frame I would also think it should bring the wall out far enough to be almost flush with the fireplace.
