My chinmeny Breast Project

Hello there, i purchased my house around 1 1/2 years ago and completly guttered it and startered again.

After seeing lots of installs on here and with the added worry of my little son banging his head or face on the TV cabinet i have decided to mount my TV "IN" the chimney breast.

It still is not finished but i will keep you updated with progress.I

I have a Sharp 42" LCD, PS3, V+ and Samsung Surround Sound system (Soon to be upgraded)

Builder came in and took a big hole out of my breast and supported it with a Lintel.

Then i had the job of bricking the old fireplace up as i dont use it and i think it would draw the attention away from the new hole once finished.

After that i then started to drill holes in the side for accomadating the extended Virgin TV cable, the Fuse spurred power cable and the QED micro cable for the rears, i also put in place a sub out cable ready for when i buy my new system.

Once i had done this i then started to try and mark the holes for my bracket, due to the heavy weight of the bracket i decided to make a cardboard replica of the base plate, this allowed me to mark the drilling points better.

Please remember that my TV is 102cm wide and my opening is 115cm wide, so i dont have much room for error. I trippled checked everything and then drilled my holes.

I then went to start wall membraning my chimney breast as previously i had mysterious dark patches coming through the paint, which i thought was damp but it turned out to be salts coming from the brick. the only way to stop this is cover it in membrane or 3-1 render and then skim(even this doesnt cure it)

So i am now waiting for my plasterer to come and give me a quote and a start date.

ill post more pictures when i am done.

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

You only needed four fixings in that bracket...

Putting 15 in will have the opposite effect to what you desired and weaken the substrate the point of crumbling!

The reason the bracket has lots of holes in it is to assist you if you have a difficult surface to mount to or need to align with a stud - not to have a bolt through every hole.

If you haven't fully tightened / fully drilled all the holes yet, I'd recommend only using the corner ones when you finally come to fix it.

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

oops, ive drilled all the holes, what do you suggest i do? fill them back in with something?

or just use the four corners like suggested and dont use the other ones, could i fill them back in with a strong Mortar Mix? Or will some Bonding silicone be enough?

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

I'd probably use some injectable epoxy resin or something similar. You need a big gun as well though so it's beginning to get expensive.

The drilling itself might not have done much harm - it's the potential expansion when you screw all the fixings in that I'd be more worried about.

Someone will be along in a minute to tell you I'm fussing about nothing!

You definitely only need to screw four - or at the most six - of those fixings in though when you come to mount the bracket.

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

I reckon that if you haven't tightened them up, no harm will have been done.

Probably flapping over nothing but you never know! Depends how soft the bricks were.

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

well the bricks are really hard, old butterly bricks, weigh about 3 times more than the standard modern bricks.

But i ve just injected the resin into the holes and left my self 6 anchor points, the rest have been done with the Fischer resin.

It always best to be cautious with anything like that, i never gave it a thought tbh.

thanks for youre help and i will post pics when it is done. Just waiting for plasterer now.

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

well i have now had the breast boarded and skimmed and waiting for my shleves to be made, once this is done i will be setting it all up, will take pictures once all done. Very happy with it tbh, i will be just glad when its up there as mu little boy keeps hitting his head on the current glass stand. At the moment i am going for high gloss black shelves but when i have enough spare cash i would like glass shelves in black, had a quote from a local glass firm and they wanted £100 per shelf, 400 deep by 1100 wide. is that the norm for black glass

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

glass sounds expensive to me i could get a sealed unit cheaper than that, find it hard to believe being makes it that much more expensive.

Doesn't sound too bad. Bearing in mind:

It will need to be toughened
Edges will need polishing
Coloured glass is more expensive anyway

Re: My chinmeny Breast Project

well the Tv is now up there and i am well pleased, made the room so much bigger, just waiting for the glass shelves now.
All powered by a fuse spur on the side of the chimney so i can easily get at it, ive threaded all cables for the av receiver i am saving for, QED rear and sub cable.

Just dont know whether to install lights behind the TV??

Plus i am now saving for the av receiver and the KEF 5.1.
