New to AV

Hi there,
I am completly new to AV and only 25, so I haven't much experience or knowledge.

I have been fortunate enough to buy a house that basically needs gutting, but I would like to modernise and future proof the house whilst making it liveable.

My main idea is that I would like a projector system in the lounge with a drop down screen infront of the tv, so that movies can be watched, but i'm not sure of the quality of picture that I could achieve in a small room, I think approximately 12ft x 12ft with a budget of about £1000 for the equiptment.

I would also like to integrate a HTPC into the system as I would like to rip all my DVDs to it, but not sure of what kind of spec PC I would require, and again if there is any loss of quality when viewing the picture?

I think there are probably a million and one questions to ask, but these are the main ones for now.

If anyone could suggest anything that I could do in the house i.e. mood lighting, automation etc, that would be great, because I don't want to miss anything out when doing the house to then want to add afterwards!
