Building a box to sit my floor standing speakers on????

Hello chaps,

I've had my Monitor Audio GS20's speakers for a year or two now. Due to the shape of my room one of them sit behind the arm of a chair. This has always annoyed me as I'm sure it's not helping with the acoustics. The speaker has three speakers and it's the bottom bass cone that is being blocked by the chair.

Moving the chair isn't an option so I'm considering building a box to sit them on. The only problem is that the boxes would need to be about 30cm's high. I'm not sure how I'd get a solid base and would I do more damage than good due to poor speaker isolation (not sure I believe in it!!)

Any ideas would be great.

I would just build a box out of MDF and paint outside to suit. Make sure the bottom of the box is sealed with the aid of some silicon bathroom sealant. Then fill the box with kiln dry sand. Then securely fit the lid of box. The box will now be solid, heavy and non-resonant.

I think Quantas did something similar for the stage area in his cinema room build.

Thanks, I don't think I'd get away with using MDF as we've recently laid Oak flooring and I think the other half would have something to say about it. I like the sand idea though. I was considering some speaker stands but I think I'd be lucky to find some that would fit in the space I have.

If you feel the need to raise the speaker, I strongly suggest you do them both. It'll sound very strange if they are at different heights. Might give you the opportunity to move the one on the right further away from the corner, which would improve things too.

Hi Deckingman,

Yes I'll definitely be doing both speakers.

I'll hopefully be getting a new TV later on in the year so I should be able to get a smaller rack which should enable me to bring the right one out of the corner a little bit.

Unfortunately I have fairly large kit so placement is difficult and there isn't much room for maneuver.
