Fibre optic lights

Hi,

I'm thinking of making a 'star ceiling' using a fibre optic light kit and I was wondering if anyone has got any opinions on which is the best kit and whether it's worth doing etc.

I've seen a kit on a well know auction site for about £90 that uses an LED light source and comes with 150 2m fibre optic strands but the seller doesn't seem to have any pictures of it in operation so I'm a little wary. All opinions and ideas welcome!

Thanks,

Just to throw something else into the pot, have you looked at something like the marshall nightsky?

MARSHALL NIGHTSKY CEILINGS - Home

Ive heard good reports on them. They have things like nebulas and stuff painted on aswell as stars. However, I think considerably more than the amount youve already mentioned!

Gee,
if you look at my thread "new extension new cinema room" you will see I have installed a star ceiling. I went down the route of halogen because they are dimmable and look great when the light is subdued. I can certainly point you away from the mistakes I made "many". But what I can assure you is that when the lights are turned off the ceiling is absolutely stunning and all the pain over the last few weeks was well worth the end result I am approaching.

Hi Mitsi,

Thanks for your reply. I had a quick look at that link but I think the fibre optic route will be best because I can turn them off when I want! Thanks again though!

Hi Quantas,

I had a look at your little project; very impressive! Your star ceiling is exactly the kind of thing I'm after (only mine will be a fair bit smaller); where did you get your kit from and how much was it if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers,

Hi Gee,

I got my kit from Starscape, a very helpful two man operation, ask for John he knocked a wee bit off as well and sent me an xtra motor and a couple of transformers so I should be set for life.

Word of warning though, they are not "dimmable" straight out of the box they require a wee bit of modification to work through a varilight IR wall switch. I can tell you how I did it if you PM me.

I've put some hours into it and its not their yet but the ceiling looks the dogs and Very Definitely worth the effort and swearing.

Please feel free to contact me and I can point out the mistakes I made which ate time up to get round them.

Forgot to mention how much, I had 400 tails made of varying lengths from 1m to 3.5m and the pack cost me about £350.

Russ

Re: Fibre optic lights

Hi guys,

Just thought I would report back now that I've finished my star ceiling. I managed to pick up a kit from a well know auction site for about £60 and after alot of messing about with MDF and a glue gun I've finished!

Anyway I've added a few pics to show the end results. I did mean to take some pics during the construction but I totally forgot but if you've got any question please ask away.

Cheers,
