Stud finders

Is it me or are stud finders rubbish?

I bought one to find the studs in my plasterboard wall so I could do the cable routing without randomly making holes in the wall. Having tried it out, it seems very hit and miss. If I don’t place my hand on the wall next to the finder (I assume this is discharging somewhat), it reads AC current on EVERY point on the entire wall!

Even when I use the hand technique, it does seem a bit random. Anybody else had issues with them before?
Out of interest it was £20 from B&Q (I think it is made by Stanley)
Thanks
Martin

Re: Stud finders

The ones from B&Q are a bit hit and miss, they are reliable at locating metal capping and thats about it. Some of the better ones work fairly well, but I would only ever treat the results as a guide rather than absolute. Tape measure and tapping the wall usually works better......

Re: Stud finders

And if it all sounds the same? does it mean there are no studs in the wall?

Re: Stud finders

unless they are making plasterboard in much bigger diemensions than they used, there are definitely studs. otherwise it's a solid wall.

tbh, i have trouble at times as wel, some are obvious, some aren't. My father though, seems to have a knack for finding them. knowing roughly where the first oen should be helps a lot of course
