18 Years in the making...

Gents,

I've been into Home Cinema for the last 18 years since my dad brought home a Marantz SP50 (A Dolby Pro-Logic Decoder) in 1990. I've had various systems throughout the years, Pioneer, Kenwood, Yamaha - you name it.

I've now finally moved to a house where I can build my dream home cinema. I know there have been loads of conversions on the site and I was just wondering if you guys wanted to see another load of conversion photos. The build starts on Saturday and will be complete for Christmas.

The system:

Room 3m X 5m
Onkyo 605 / Denon AVC11 SR THX Amps
7.1 Jamo THX Speakers
SVS PC13 Ultra
Infocus IN76
PS3
Xbox 360
Denon DVD Player
Mac Mini

So the questions (and I'm not being funny) if you want to see the WIP photos!

As its stands!

Cheers

James

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Absolutely yes!
My mate had his garage converted to a Cinema, and it looks very similar dimensions to your room.

It was awsome!

Asking if we'd like to see pictures on here is probably a bit like asking the Pope if he'd like us to pray. (I'm not religious by the way!)

Bring on the piccies.

you may want to resize them first to save you time uploading such big files only for the forum to resize them. You can get a free

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Gents,

Heres the weekends work. I'm knackered. Getting there, just waiting for the electrician whos coming on Thursday.

Please let me know your views.

P.S - I've never done DIY on this scale so please be gentle.

The big clear out.

Floor batons go down.

More graft.

First site injury. It was touch and go for some time.

Floor insulation goes down.

Floor goes down.

Everything back inside.

Frame for the 'Gear Pit' is started.

Garage door sealed.

Wall baton marathon...

Not a single sraight wall in the place...

AV cables in - HDMI, DVI, Component, Composite & Power... that was fun...

Speaker cable in.

As it stands. Electrician Thursday. Boarding Friday night. Plasterer weekend (I hope).

Cheers

James

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Hey !! I see they've finally got your broadband up.

Looks you are really motoring now. Its exciting. Look forward to seeing how it comes together.

I see your SVS is still boxed. I would have hooked it up to my iPod by now just to unleash the beast............

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Cheers.

Ah yes, broadband all up and running... I might actually get Sky HD on saturday... its only taken 7 weeks to sort it out... I'm not impressed with Sky.

I also owe you a review of your fine SVS PB13... I will get writing.

SVS in its box is driving me mental... I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Cheers

Re: 18 Years in the making...

My brother in law was supposed to do it for me (he built his own house), but he couldn’t help before Christmas and that just isn’t in the plan. So I did some research, really thought about it and drew up my own plans.

I can honestly say I'm glad he couldn’t help. Its one of the most satisfying things I've ever done (If it goes wrong, I may regret saying that).

Having someone to help is a real bonus and I do have to say a big thank you to my best mate, Matt, who travelled 130 miles to help. He isn’t a builder but he did bring along the ‘High Viz’ vests for a laugh. Hopefully he'll recover from his splinter accident.

If anyone is thinking about converting their garage, I say, just do it. Once I've completed it (and if all goes to plan) I will post the exact quantities and what I bought so you can get an idea of what is required - if you're interested that is. I think you'll be surprised at what you can do with a little hard work and modest amount of money.

Cheers

James

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Afternoon gents - small update for you.

Water pipes are installed for the radiator

Pipes are now connected to the central heating.

A section of the existing ceiling has now been removed for the Electrician on Tuesday. This will also enable me to get the insulation in properly once he's done.

I've spent most of the weekend strengthening the batons. I want to mitigate the chances of vibrations and rattles caused by the PC Ultra.

So here it is as it stands.

I've now got the wood for the screen, ordered the carpet, got the paint... its all go. Electrcian Tuesday, boarding Wednesday night and the Plasterer is in on Thursday/Friday.

Final push next week.

Andy - re the screen size I'm going to go as big as I can, then use the zoom on the projector to proabably reduce the size. I will then border the screen once I'm happy. The reason for doing this, is when projector tech gets better I'm thinking I can increase the size of the screen as the resolutions get higher. The max size will be approximately 140 Inches, I think I go for about 100 to a 120.

Cheers

James

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Morning,

I need your collective help please.

Speakers - Jamo THX Speakers 7 Channels - SVS PC Ultra Sub.

Option 1 -

Panasonic DMP BD 35 working with the Onkyo 605 I already have.

Or

Option 2 -

Panasonic DMP BD 55 working with my Denon AVC11SR THX Amp using the 8 channel inputs.

Any ideas which would be best?

Cheers

Re: 18 Years in the making...

The Denon will have far more power to control your speakers and sub. So I would proabably go with that too.

You would just lose the HDMi switching I suppose. But I have a spare 2 in 1 out switch box you can have if you find that you need it.

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Listing two because I have both of them to hand. I just dont know which to go for. In the HCC review of the 605 it said that the power output when driving 5 channels at 4ohms (which my speakers are) was poor. To quote -

I'm swaying towards the Denon - then I still get to keep the THX Ultra processing.

Cheers

Re: 18 Years in the making...

Hi Gonzo,

I need the strip lights removing, a ring of wiring for the sockets (please forgive my terminology), wiring the 5 sockets, 3 wall lights installing and the dimmer added to control them. There are already sockets in the room - my sparky, when he priced the job that would make it easy. Basically the positioning of the lights needs changing and more sockets adding. Fuse box is in the room and there is easy access to the walls and above the ceiling as you can see from the pics.

I have all the sockets, lights and dimmer - sparky was bringing the wire and back boxes.

Cheers

James
