Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

Hi all

so my cinema build had slowed down a little recently due to lack of motivation but thanks to hours reading on here every day im back motivated so thought id start by posting my plan.

this cinema will also double up as a guest room at the bottem of my garden.

the log cabin/ shed is all built im just going through the process of filling any gaps with no more gaps. My insultaion should turn up next week at which point i can get cracking again.

At present the only equipment i have is the ps3 and AV rack but will be buying at the end of january. Most likely i will be buying from here to save myself a few pennies : )

The back wall will be black with a fixed screen and the cieling will also be black. There will be spot lights 12 inches from the floor down both of the sides.

Just wanted to share with you.

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

What is the size of the room?
You're showing the L & R speakers right into the corners..This is not a good location for them..
Do you have enough width in the room, to move them away from the side walls?
Also, what size screen are you considering to put up?
Should be an interesting project..

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

Hi there

The room size is 10 x 10 feet so only small.

I was looking at a 6 foot diagnal fixed screen as i believe that will be the most i can get from the projector at that distance.

I could possible move the left an right speakers closer in so will look into that : )

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

A square room is going to present all sorts of problems, acoustically speaking....
I realize that you don't have enough room to put in a false wall to change the room ratio..so you are going to need some heavy dampening in that room..
To tame the standing waves and resonances, you will need bass traps in all four corners and some acoustic panels on the walls at first and second reflection points..
This will help to some degree, but still not perfect..

Screen size should be OK..

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

oh cr+p. I actually ordered and paid for a different cabin but that was what turned up. i ordered a 20 x 12 foot.

The company i ordered from has disapeared so was unable to get money back so i cut my losses and just got on with it.

How much will bass traps cost me?

and where can I get accoustic panels from?

One more thing what is first and second reflection?

Every time I tick something off the Cinema Room To-do List, another thing creeps on there. Actually more like 2.

Good luck with the project HOF, I'm sure somebody will be along soon to answer your questions

That's terribly bad luck..That size cabin would have been ideal..

Quote:
How much will bass traps cost me?
That depends on what you use..
The cheapest way is to make them yourself..All you need is some semi-rigid fibreglass sheets, or some Rockwool and a simple frame and covering to fit them into..
I've made several myself, and they work well..
If you decide to go this route, I can help you with the making of them..

To buy commercially made traps can get expensive and they're no better than what you can make yourself..

Quote:
and where can I get accoustic panels from?
Again..make them yourself..If you have any basic carpentry skills, you won't find it difficult..
I also made my own..

Quote:
One more thing what is first and second reflection?
Reflection points are where the sound waves from the L & R front speakers, bounce off the side walls..
You can determine these points by having someone slide a mirror along a sidewall (level with the speaker) While you sit in the centre seat..
They move the mirror along the wall, from say the left speaker, until you can see the reflection of the speaker in the mirror..
This will be the first reflection point and is where you would place an acoustic panel..

Then they would continue sliding the mirror along the wall further, until you can see another reflection of the other speaker..
This is then your second reflection point..

I hope I've explained that clearly enough for you..Just let me know if there's anything that's not clear..

You will need 4..One in each corner of the room...and preferably floor to ceiling in height..

One other thing I forgot to mention before..
Because you have a room that's short in length, soundwaves are going to bounce readily off your back wall and you will need acoustic panels on there as well...
In fact the more acoustic panels you can put in the room, the better, to try reduce standing waves and resonances as much as possible..

Thanks for that prof. I wouldnt have offered help as I will end up taking you up on that

Would you look at 7.1 or 5.1 for that size room?

I never thought there would be this much involved.

HOF..My cinema room is 15' long and I have a 7.1 AVR..but I only use it as 5.1 system..In that length, it's not necessary to go to 7.1, so in your situation, 5.1 will be fine..

Acoustically treating a cinema room is an art in itself, and even the best acoustic materials and panel placement, will be a compromise at best..
The general rule is.."The more the better"..

I'm only too happy to help if I can..I received a lot of help from experienced people when I first started in home cinema (approx. 20 years ago), so I'm only too happy to help others get their start..

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

HOF..I would advise you to get a 7.1 AVR, even though you'll only be using it as a 5.1 system in your present room..

Should the opportunity arise in the future for a larger room, then you will be able to use the full 7.1 channel system..

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

Sorry prof have only just seen the reply.

not a lot of progress im afriad.

All the insualtion is done so it now looks like a space ship.

Ive got a new door and frame to fit to keep the draft out.

Ive bought all my leds/spot lights and sockets and speaker wire so am scouting round for my equipment. I am picking up the HD65 Optoma at the end of the month and will have a big push to get it finnished by end of Feb.

I am also thinking of repositioning the AV rack to the right hand side so that itdoesnt detract from the screen.

re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

So here are a few pictures.
first one is from half way down garden. Difficult to imagine what it looks like in summer but think ten foot high bamboo all around the BBQ decking area with tree ferns so all you will see is the very top of the roof.

Second is the outside at present. The door is being replaced by a solid wood external door and fdoor frame and new windows will be going in. Also this will be getting a new colour of paint in the summer and shingles rather than felt on the roof.

Third pic is of the far wall where the screen will go. the full size door gives you an idea on how tall the building is in its centre.

As you can see still loads to do and its not the biggest but hey ho it will do for my first cinema experience.

MODS - is there any chance of changing the title to garden room/cinema plan/build with pics?

Looks like a nice setting..

Is the cinema room a separate building, away from the house, or adjoining it?

Its a seperate building at the back of the garden. So its about 200foot away from the house. I wanted something away from the house due to my kids and me wanting to have the volume at a decent level

Im going to build a small veranda on the front soon so that you can also sit on there in the summer.

Also i can get 4 5foot 6 inch tall base traps for £200,

Re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

Yep im very excited. I still need to buy my amp and speakers and hdmi leads oh and screen but will get them at the end of the month.

Im going to go and put the wire in for speakers today and set up my 6 small led spot lamps.

I can not decide where to put the LED's though. Do i put 3 on either side going from back to front or all under the screen or all on the back wall?

HOF...I would put 3 down each side, evenly spaced from front to back..
That way you get some light onto the screen area, as well as some lighting for the seating area..

Done it looks quite good. I was concerned that the LED's were a little small (45mm) but because the room is so small i think they will be ok.

Re: Garden room/cinema plan/build with pics

Speaker wire is now in. Just need to buy and fit my HDMI and sub cable now then get the electrics done

http://www.projectorcentral.com/Opto...ulator-pro.htm

so that should work out a decent size screen seeing as the depth of the house is smaller than i thought.

Ive just done some internal measurements and the builinds internals are 10 foot 3 accross the width and 9 foot 2 in depth. : (

oh well a 184cm diagnol screen is still a beast compared to my 37inch lcd in the lounge.

Are ceiling brackets adjustable in length? because my cieling is very high in the centre it may be difficult to mount there.

According to the calculator, the smallest screen size you can have for the HD65 is 250cm diagonal screen.!!..and that would be an incredibly bright image..
What distance are you proposing to project from?

There are telescopic mounts available for such a situation..You might have to do a Google search to find one..
