Hi there wondered if anyone with experience can give me some advice.

I am going to be building an extension on the back of my current cinema room (dining room).

The size now is 12 foot wide by 11'5".

I have a choice of extending it to 20ish foot x 12 wide which makes it a rectangle (9.5 foot long extension) or can widen the extension to around 16 foot max which will make the room a 'T' shape.

The wider room is apealing but I dont want to end up with a crap sounding room. The rectangle shape room dimensions would be very close to the golden ratio for acoustics (well from what I have read anyway)

The far wall of the extension would be solid for the screen and the windows would be on the side.

I would definately go for the 12' x 20' version..
A cinema room should be as symetrical as possible...Makes it much easier to acoustically tune the room and provides a balance of speaker positions..

Thanks for that I was thinking that would be best but just wanted a second opinion.

I may go for slightly longer then 21 or 22. I dont want any longet due to potential room modes if the length is double the width.

The longer I go the more potential there is for a false screen wall to hide all of the speakers.

At 22' you'll still be ok..and with a false screenwall, you can still get two rows of seating..

The longer I go the more potential there is for a false screen wall to hide all of the speakers.

If you're like me and prefer not to see any front speakers..then that's the way to go..NO distractions!!..and a nice clean appearance like this..

It's actually a door..I used to have my AV gear in there, but I've since moved it all into another room..Didn't like to see the indicator lights through the cloth,..
The sub is at the other end..

What size is that screen

It's a 2.4M. wide CIH screen..

Here are a few more shots of my cinema..

This is the suspended ceiling tray which holds the downlights and an exhaust fan..plus all the power and lighting controls. .
The room has three outside walls..( being at the end of a ranch style house) and it's not well insulated and gets quite stuffy, being a fairly small room..

Benq projector with Anamorphic lens and DIY slide..

Other end of the ceiling tray with power and lighting controls..

And finally three comfy recliners to watch great movies!!

PS..I'm currently re-modelling the cinema to a more Traditional style of decor..

There is no golden ratio for room sizes. There are many acceptable room dimension ratios one could have and still end up with a good sounding room.
A google search for 'Ideal room ratios' got you a very good reply to your Home Cinema Dimensions question. It also has an excel file to download.

I had read that it was width 1.6 x the height and length was 2.6 x the height.

On the spreadsheet, say on the first line would the first number (1 )be the height the next one along is the width (1.1) and the next one the length (3.99)?

Is that how it works?

I`m thinking of curtains down the side of my cinema room and wondered what material you had used, where from, is it lined and finally how much. Finally finally did you have them made up for you

Looks great by the way

Also Rigman, my room is almost 6 mts square and seems to work very well audio wise,as your in east yorks feel free to bob in for a look if you wish.

Looking forward to seeing it all happen so lots of pics please

Yes..It's all DIY..
The only thing I didn't make was the curtains..My sister was kind enough to make those for me..

Hi Allan..
The curtain material is a grey suede..but only light weight..The reason for that is that I have acoustic panels behind them..
They're not lined, for the acoustic reason..

I bought the material from a dress materials store..but since I'm on the other side of the world..downunder!..It wouldn't be a store you have over there..

The material cost $19.95/metre and I bought 14M. for the two curtains..
That's probably about 9 Pounds/metre in your money..

My sister was the seamstress!! and did a very nice job..
