advice needed from guys with a real or false chimney breast

i'm looking for some advice guys.

my current set up is currently very tempoary.

i'm seriously thinking about building a false chimney breast to mount my t.v on & maybe mount an electric fire in.

i have some questions as i have never had a house with 1 in. i would appricate advice from anyone with a chinmey.

1. the wall measures 3.2m X 2.3m. the tv is a 42" phillips which is 1.24m wide. how wide would you have the chimney.

2. how deep would you make the chimney.

3. how high should the t.v. (mine is currently high, but as i said it's temp). should it be eye level.

cheers in advance for your advice guys.

Re: advice needed from guys with a real or false chimney breast

Hi mate I have built a few in my time and to be honest the width and depth is really summit you wanna decide yourself as its personal preference! In regards to depth i dont really think that matters much aslong as you can get your cables behind it....all depends on the size of the room i suppose. And the same again with the width, If it were me I would just make it 3 or 4 inches wider either side of the plasma screen.

Now as for height this can depend a little on the sort of bracket your using (whether its tilt or not). but again its personal preference!! Talking personally I dont like them to be TO high as you end up cricking your neck watching them....so for me a little general rule of thumb is to but te bottom of the screen at pretty much eye level...thats about a comfortable hieght for me.

When I am over my dads house at the weekend i will take a pic of the chimney breast i built him to house his 50" Hitachi.

One thing i will say is.....make SURE its strong!!! lol One thing you dont want falling off the wall is your screen dude! lol

Hope some of this helps

Re: advice needed from guys with a real or false chimney breast

Hi legs, I agree with the advice that ditas has given re. the dimensions of your new chimney breast. I've got a 'real' one which I'm currently mounting my TV on, and for reference it measures 180cm wide (the total length of the wall is 375cm) and the alcoves are about 40cm deep.

Just make sure it's central (my chimney breast is annoyingly off-centre!) and decide what you want to use the alcoves for before you decide how deep to make them. Alcoves can be an excellent place to store your AV equipment, in which case make sure you make them deep enough (at least 40cm). On the other hand if you just want to store CDs, DVDs, books etc you could make them more shallow.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!
