My bk xls300 attempt

thought i would build myself a couple of bk xls300pr as i have a couple of peerless xls 10s kicking around, all i will have to buy is a couple of bk plate amps and 2 passive radiators and some 25mm mdf. i needed the subs to be smallish thats why i chose the 300 to copy, i already have there xls200 wich is good for a small sub, i am hoping to achieve a little better result with 2 xls 300's, just wondering if anyone has 2 of these runing together and if so what do they sound like. I will up some photos later.

just added a couple of photos of the cabs primed ready for top coat, should be ready for about mid week will post a couple of pics of finished items.

one of the cabs is now finished and has turned out very well and sounds pretty good even if i do say so myself, it will be nice to get the other one done so i can compare the difference between 1 and 2 subs running.

what dya think,

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

I must admit that of all the tasks on this project, the painting of the cabs was by far the most traumatic, but well worth the effort.

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

Looks great! Kinda missing the grille though. I would love to have the space to do that. How do you go about rounding the edges and corners off?

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

Nice work there! I have a gloss black xls300 and it looks nigh on identical - even the 'monolith' feet.

Your plate amp looks to be a different model though. Mine has the gain/phase etc. controls mounted vertically on the left.

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

Hi Lee

they look really pro mate, I wish I could do summat like that but you really need all the joinery tools for such a project.

As to the grill, I looked on ebay a while back and found a bloke who made them out of perforated steel, you know little holes all over it. He folded the edges as well so no nasty edges and if you wanted powder coated them, about £15 each mate so not that expensive and they look fantastic.

Anyway great job, can you build me a pair of SVS jobbies, you know summat nice and massive

cheers Al

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

Bike nut you are correct about the amp, it is actually a xls 200 amp modified by bk themselves and apparently it is the same amp as the xls 300 when the mods are done apart from its physical looks. The feet i machined out of ally,
Albriscoe thanks for the tip for the grill will have a look and see.
and thanks for the kind words.

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

I did all the work myself apart from making the amp mods, BK did this when i purchased them. All that is remaining for me to do is sort a grill out, i would like to make the grill a little unusual so am still working on that.

Is it a circular cutting template for the 2 drivers. 8" for the hole, 10" for the full size of the driver.

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

well guys as it sits under a crt tv the sub had to be magnetically shielded and this is what its for, and as an added bonus with the extra weight it gives to the sub ( about 30lb old money) it also stops the sub walking around to much.

Re: My bk xls300 attempt

Because the driver faces down and the shield is very heavy and also the magnetic efect, there is no need to fix it permenently, although i have had to wrap the magnet with masking tape to fill the air gap (5mm) between the magnet and shield so that its a snug fit and applied foam pads to the top of the magnet to space it from the shield, all in all a very good result, i could sit the tv on top of it and it would not have any effect on the picture.
