getting av shelves!

im having my alcove shelved to accomodate an onkyo606, ps3, wii, dvdr, tiscali, and modem.

id planned on having onkyo on its own shelf,
ps3 and tiscali/modem on next,
wii and dvdr on another, with a shelf over all of that for 'pretty pic frames' for the mrs.

this is the best fit but what im curious to know is… can i have these shelves built so that there is very little clearance above each of these? ie

can i have the onkyo on a shelf then 10mm clearance before the next shelf and so on, or should i allow more room for each to 'breathe'?

the shelves will be wood.

thanks

Re: getting av shelves!

1 cm is nowhere near enough. especially for Onkyos which I believe have a reputation of running quite hot anyway (well the 605 certainly did anyway)

Your manual should give you guidance on clearance required. I'd probably have at least 10 times that (i.e. 10cm) as an absolute minimum for an amp.

(Edit not 10 times the manual recommendations but 10 times your suggestion, just reread my comments )

The PS3 also needs decent clearance on the the side/front. Top clearance isn't such an issue (the vents are on the side/front) but to enclosed a space can cause a build up of heat. The PS3 should warn you if getting too hot and shut down but if it is running warmer the fans will run faster and make it noisier.

Your other devices may be able to be accomodated with a smaller gap.

Re: getting av shelves!

Currently my 606 sits on a glass av unit (about to change it) to the shelf above its about a 5 inch gap and that shelf gets warm to the touch, so no, 1cm isnt really enough, unless you want the amp to run really hot, or you have some other means of pushing the air out.

think the manual says for 6 inches of clearance, if i remember right

hope this helps
