Plasterboard LCD Mount

I know there are a lot of these threads, but I wanted to ask a few questions.

First of all, I am thinking of creating a floating wall (obviously) but it is going onto a plasterboard internal wall. The TV is a 37" Toshiba XV.

1. What I was thinking of doing was making the wood square frame, and then putting a sheet of 18mm thick MDF onto that, then mounting the TV onto the MDF. Will MDF hold this TV? (23kg?). Or will I have to put another sheet behind that, and bolt through both of them?

It's going to be about 2 metres high I think. I don't like the idea of putting the bracket on the wall.

2. Can I create the frame off the wall, and have all the weight resting on the floor, and then somehow attach the whole thing to the wall? What would be the best way to do this?

What is your advice guys?

Thanks. =]

Re: Plasterboard LCD Mount

18mm MDF will easily support a TV weighing 23kg. No need to worry, just wood screws straight into it, but be careful not to overtighten them as it is relatively easy to strip out the holes. Do bore pilot holes before screwing in the screws.

At my previous workplace I built a floating wall using 11mm MDF with 2" x 1" strapping as the framework behind it. We had a Pioneer PDP428 mounted on it (previously a 427, and before that a 40" Samsung). If I remember correctly the Pioneer weighed around 30kg.

As far as the construction is concerned you could simply screw wooden battens horizontally at 3 or four heights (bottom, top, and two evenly spaced in the middle) directly to the wall. This would allow you to screw into the supporting studs behind the plasterboard for better support. Then you could screw straight onto these battens.
You could make these battens vertical instead which would more easlily allow cables to be run behind the MDF.

Re: Plasterboard LCD Mount

Wouldn't it be easier just to buy one of those metal frame type mounts that are almost as wide as the TV and just screw it to the verical studs through the plasterboard? Thats what I did - nice and simple!!

Re: Plasterboard LCD Mount

Thanks for the reply mate. Very informative =]

I'm still a bit worried about it but I guess I'll have to invest in a stud finder.

It doesn't matter if the tv sticks out. It doesn't bother me. It will still look cool lol.

Thanks for your help. One last question. How does the mount actually work? How do you install it? Do you do the uprights on the tv and then just hang that onto the wall part? It will be a simple tilt mount with a big flare back plate for optimum support.

Thanks.

Dont bother with a stud finder, most are a waste of time. Just use a small screwdriver or bradawl and make holes at say 20mm intervals ( not in a line ) until you hit a stud. You can always fill the small holes in with some polyfiller when you have finished as they will be behind the screen.

One of this type should be OK (do a search for one for 37"):- Google Image Result for http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31%2BGstmdIdL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Screw back plate to studs, making sure you get two vertical studs and the vertical arms attach to back of TV. The TV then clips on when you have finished.

Re: Plasterboard LCD Mount

Only problem with doing this is i don't think my dad would let me drill several holes in the wall as this is his house and my bedroom (still only 18 =/)

Are there any stud finders that do work?

It will be wooden studs (i have seen a few guides about finding metal ones)

Thanks.

Re: Plasterboard LCD Mount

Only small holes through the plasterboard that can be filled with polyfiller and will be behind TV so you wont be able to see them. If he wont let you do that I am sure he wont want you putting a floating wall in
