The Garden Room

Just about to start my garage conversion and turn it into a dedicated cinema room.

Just thought i would post my photos of the process and also ask a couple of questions along the way as iam learning fast that i 'know nothing about home cinema!!!!!!'

Anyways, i've finally got the time to start and after endless nights on these forums think i know what i want!

The equipment such as projector/speakers/amp etc are still under consideration but the short list includes:

sony vpl-hw10 projector
B&W 685 fronts/(maybe 684's)
B&W HTM 62 center
B&W DS3 rears

Sub (No idea!)

Screen will be bought at the later date, when happy with screen size!

Will post pics when i get a chance over the next couple of days.

Quick update! the builder turned up last night and told me the electrician wants to come tomorrow (as in today!!!!) was expecting a few weeks yet before start of work!!!

Not bought any speaker cable or hdmi cable for projector and they want to dot and dab on friday!!!!

Off to practical hifi this afternoon for some cables ( Qed Silver Anniversary XT speaker cable for all speakers and going to try and get a cheap hdmi cable for projector! (only about 3m!))

Was up to the early hours last night working out speaker placements etc...etc Nightmare!



Can just about see the line i've made on the wall, showing them were to place the speaker wires! about 6ft from floor! (so about 3ft above ear height and leaving 1.5m from back wall)

Seating will be 2.2m from back wall, 3m from screen wall in a 5.2m square room Just hope this will be ok??????? but run out of time

Will post some more pics over the next couple of days as it takes place.

cant get the images to show up! they appear on my screen but only when logged in?????

Hi,

Interesting project, keep the updates coming!
If I would offer any advice, it would be don't be rushed. Are you burying the projector cable? If so, I would give some consideration to buying one of good quality. I don't necessarily mean an expensively specified core, but quality connections that aren't likely to drop off if you change your amp! And think about putting more than one in, or alternative types if your projector has different units. You may not use them all now, but you may wish later you had installed them...
Don't forget power for the projector.
Don't forget your sub - you may want to put a cable in for that. And power. In fact make sure you have all your electrical distribution sorted.
Have you planned your lighting? And security? Network cable maybe?
As I say, don't be rushed!

Hi, got pictures sorted

Iam using a hdmi cable i have been using for the bedroom which was 3m and just long enough for the projector. I know its been working but as for quality it cost around £15 so might be a little risky

might stick another in the wall next to it just incase!

As the room is quite some distance from the house, i am leaving the networking until later next year. Already planned the plugs etc for projector, amp etc...etc...
Also placing sockets on all walls and in every corner for power to sub. Not placing wire for sub yet as don't know were to place it, and my understanding is you need to play around with the placement of it anyways.

Will see tonight what's been done today! hopefully the first fix should be complete.

Now, i need to go and demo some speakers, projectors etc....! The wife will be well pleased about that this weekend!!!

Oh! & i've made my first mistake! As i am wiring for 7.1 i measured the back two speakers in the dark and bought two lots of 2m Qed Silver Anniversary XT speaker cable, but they should of been two lots of 4m

I'm sorry, but theres no difference in quality between a £15 HDMI cable and a £1500 HDMI cable.

Yep i agree. However its the build quality that i am concerned about mostly! Not that i have had any problems from cheap hdmi cable! touch wood!

maybe not a difference between a £15 and £1500 cable in terms of pq but between a £5 cable which might not work at all due to sloppy toleances in the plug and a £15 which works reliably there can be a world of difference. hours of swearing at a ps3 taught me this.

Tiny update! not much happened on the conversion but i have purchased a Sony VPL-HW10 projector! Thought i best take the plunge before possible sony price increases hit

Should arrive tomorrow so will have a play around with it to make sure i've placed the cables in the wall in the correct place

The projector will be wall mounted due to the height of the vaulted ceiling and the hdmi/power etc are going to coming out the wall around 7ft from floor! hope this is high enough????!!!!

was thinking about this wall mount:

Vogels EPW6565-SI - Projector Wall Solution, Click & Switch System, turn,tilt and roll, includes 1 x EPA6505 - EPW6565-SI

but any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated!
