Fitting new tv to where fireplace is (was)

Hi All,
After looking hammering these forums like a copy of war in peace I have seen some of the awesome custom setups allot of you have, so I took the plunge and thought Id give it a go...

Now im at my first heardle..... i have purchased a 46" Bravia which should be here in few days. I have taken the fire surround off, gas man is capping my gas later... i thought id be able to resess my tv in to the wall flush as I thought it was hollow, but i just discivered that thee plaster is about 6mm thick and then goes striahgt onto thermo blocks... so i will be able to recess it about 7mm... woould it be safe to chisel out deeper? the chimney is only fake and doesnt hold the house up or anything.

Couple of pics below to show you....
I was goinf to put all my gear (dvd etc) in the whole where the fireplace was, but my sub is far too long. the sub is 17" long and the hole is 10" deep, so my thoughts are to build a frame out to accomadate the gear only anf get a nice peice of stained wood for the top to put pics on etc...

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very greatful, ill keep posting pics throughout this project.
