I'm thinking on putting up a false ceiling and having lighting around the edge to give a light effect around the top edge of the room with the light source hidden between the original ceiling and the false ceiling.

i.e. the false ceiling is an inch or two lower than the original ceilng and stops 3 or 4 inches from the walls

Can anyone recommend any suitable lights.

Could try cold cathode, a very underused lighting technology in the home. Keep it to low voltage so no electrical issues, costs around £45 / meter including ballasts which can be dimmed on normal dimmers.

Or could try the good ol' rope light which is £1.80 a metre.

My requirements are:
Continuous light effect - no breaks in the light
Little / no heat generated
Cheap

Still deciding if to go single colour or mutli colour
or IR/RF on/off / dim

Just to give you a bit more info on the rope light, you can get it in lengths of up to 45m, is mains powered and emits low heat. Its also dimmable, however the LED version is not. You can use something like a varilight dimmer for IR control. Cost has gone up to £1.95 a metre unfortunately or £63/45m.

No probs, no offence taken, the rope light is hard to beat on a cost and ease of installation, the main advantage of cold cathode is that it is much brighter, comes in many colours and could be used to light the room rather than just using as an effect. I am actually installing some in my house at the mo, so will post up some info when done, maybe 4 to 6 weeks.
