Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Andi- i will give some size and specs as it goes up , if your after something more particular then just shout , as for the non flat wall i was thinking that as well , im probably going to have an L shaped Marble or Granite computer desk built as my mate owns a marble business so should get it on the cheap....once the main building work has been done i will list some of my costs so far as it may give some of you an idea to the pennies involved...

as for the speakers , ive bought a set of Kef 3005SE in shiny piano black , should be absoloutely fine for a room of this size....

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of star ceilings , im reallt tempted to install a fibre optic jobby as shown here http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqXxGR...eature=related

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Nice to see the roof coming along, you have been lucky with the weather!

Strangely enough I had thoughts about fibre optic effects in my lounge ceiling, but figures it would be too complicated and probably a bit "batchelor pad" for the lounge which my wife wouldn't appreciate...!

Having seen that vid, I'm sure theres a hell of a lotta work in doing that for any reasonable size of ceiling so I think it's definately off my list! But for a custom made cinema / lads room, it might just be the dogs danglies!

Nice project you got going on there Yuki!

Your idea regarding the fibre optic space/stars sky is fantastic. Currently my house is a building site and I am very tempted to now implement the starry skies in the kids bedroom. Keep us posted with your research and ideas. If I come across any good sites explaining how this can be done I will post here.

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Yuki,

I think the 2nd video is amazing, not sure how easier it is to do over a fiber optic ceiling. Looks like a lot of work!!

Your project is taking shape quickly, how are you going to soundproof it? Your gonna loose at least 5cm+ with quality insulation & double layer soundblock plasterboard all round.

Have you worked out a plan for the finished article? Best to get this done ASAP, and work out what cables need laying & socket placements.

I did this too late, and it caused many headaches first time round. But worked everything out on the 2nd attempt, which i'm 200% happy with now.

Good luck with your progress, and it'll be great seeing your project taking shape.

Cheers
Lee

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Cheers cosmic - im meeting with the electrician so that we can brainstorm whats best and where . We will decide where the cables will all come out so that my chipie can build the relevant housing . Im going to have my PC in there as well so thats my fittings.
So far ive got a list of sockets and fittings i need ..

Sky , BT , ADSL all have to be installed . I will be losing some due to the insulation , but to be honest ive not thought about soundproofing as the house is detatched and the Media Room will be accessed externaly .

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Oh man, I really really wanted to do a fibre optic ceiling in my place. I looked into it quite carefully, but in the end the thing that turned me off was the price for such a large area, but if you have the opportunity to do one, I say go for it .

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Yuki,

Soundproofing would be a good move if you can. It could help with sound leakage, if your build is near neighbours?

I know my build isn't soundproofed, and that limits the times i can crank up the volume!! (I am lucky to have neighbours only on one side of this house, so that's a bonus!!)

Oh for a build (& budget) like the Americian's have, a room that you can crank it up at any time to reference levels and have none or very little sound escaping from the room!!

Sounds like you've got an reasonable idea of what your aiming for, there are plenty of people on the forums that can help you if you need it!!

Cheers

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

I like reading about all these conversions

I notice you have built the place with a single skin only. Won't this make things a bit cold with the lack of cavity insulation, or are you going to install some insulation on the internal walls?

Don't you have to comply with building regs if you change the use of the room i.e. replacing the garage with a building to be used as a liveable space?

Cheers,

Kris.

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Hi Yuki

thats a nice build you got going on there mate, looked like very neat builders as well which makes a nice change

My advice is get the roof well insulated as thats where all your heat is going to go and I think I know what sort of wall insulation you`re on about. Its a very thin roll of foiled stuff which is simply stapled to the timbers, haven`t used it myself as I couldn`t get my head round it being any good but its supposed to be within spec so must be

Anyway make sure you run plenty of spare cables into the room, ie cat5`s and things as I`m certain you`ll miss one somewhere if you don`t.

Battle on mate its looking great

cheers Al

Yukichon, is it Triso Super-10 you're using for the roof insulation? It comes in a large foiled roll (as albriscoe says) with a few foil layers sandwiching insulation between, but is very thin compared to Kingspan/Celotex. If so I can highly recommend it - we're using it in our loft cinema build to minimise the loss in ceiling height but I've also seen it installed elsewhere and it works very well.

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

Mike , thanks for the link ... very useful , ill be very interested to see how you get on and what the costs involved are . Im still undecided on which type to go for , ive been quoted for the painted ceiling with a 20 year guarentee , size 21 x 9 ft ..... £328 ... but they want £1 per mile for the journey which is another £203 which i think is a bit of a rip off . As we all know , even at todays fuel costs a 200 mile journey in a caris probably about £40 tops

you going to use that fancy insulation on the walls as well? whats it going to be like for sound insulation? will it help at all if its that thin?

Re: Yuki's New Media Room Project

I bet they sing a Diesel as well - the fibre optic ceiling is looking like a mission for the size i have
As for insulation , my builder has said that i dont have to have thin roof insulation as my the ceiling height is almost 9 ft so we have room to play with , so im probably going to use the Triso Super-10 on the walls ( cheers for the tip Magslad )

Good news ....... despite the rain the brickies have turned up to finish the gables

Bad news ........ http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=3398
