Starting from scratch

I am building a new house and to be honest had originally just thought about conventional wiring. It’s been major undertaking and to be honest I had not given much thought to home entertainment and future proofing as I really don’t watch that much TV and usually listen to music in the car as I don’t normally have time at home. Before I get to the wiring stage I guess I really need to sort out exactly what I need as a minimum for my own use and to take into account what I will need for the future. The house has a large sitting room, a kitchen and a separate dining room, three large bedrooms and a loft/playroom. In terms of my own needs, I just want a wall mounted TV (56inch approx) and a reasonable DVD/Home Cinema system. I would much prefer my speakers to be hidden, I am not a big fan of the in your face display that you see with many systems.

In terms of future proofing, I have two young children 6 and 4, so they will so be demanding their own TV’s and internet access etc. I guess that ultimately I am going to looking at speakers in every room in the house, TV access everywhere, internet access in each room, telephones etc etc. On top of all this, as it’s a rural property I am going to need to install some kind of security system involving alarms and video monitoring. I am a novice at this and the electricians in the area don’t seem to be geared for this kind of system.

Can anyone offer some advice or suggestions on a way forward that does not entail spending a small fortune?

Hi,

You might be better off asking this question in the DIY forum.

(ask the mods to move it)

...or find a local expert in your area, who will be able to visit your home, or look at the plans, and work with you to suggest and/or install the right cables for your needs.
