Red wall, yay or nay?

Hi guys,

Looking at the room, it's a bit plain being all one cream colour so after seeing someone else's room in a nice red, i think mine could look pretty decent, what ya think? Another positive is that the dark red will hide my bad plastering better where i've laid wires behind the wall, hopefully.

Any ideas welcome.

Yes definitely.... Burmese Ruby all the way.
Just to warn you - you'll probably need to put on about 4 coats

Re: Red wall, yay or nay?

Sorry mate, these were all I could find - we used it on a dividing wall/chimney breast:

A couple of litres should do the job. Always water the paint down until it's a nice runny consistency - it means you'll need an extra coat (or 2) but it'll go on much easier than if you paint direct from the tin. I reckon you'll need 4 coats to get an even colour so don't worry when the first few coats look very patchy...

Yes definatly. I also painted some of my walls red after seeing some one elses room on here. I used a colour called 'tinsel town' from wilkinsons Very nice colour indeed. You should get a tester

I'm really liking that, will add that red to the sample list aswell. Living room rocks BTW.

Would red show up bumps worse then cream?

We used roasted red on our bedroom feature wall. Your photoshoped wall looks much nicer than the plain one.

Re: Red wall, yay or nay?

Copplepot, just my two cents - unless your walls are really good, go with a matt finish, as a silk finish will show up imperfections. Also don't be afraid to go with a really bright, brilliant red, as opposed to a toned down pastel red. Maybe also think about painting the adjacent walls a brilliant white to really set it off, instead of keeping the magnolia. Good luck !

Would totally agree with you there, I went for an off-white rather than brilliant, but used that for the skirting.. think main thing is to try and emphasise the red, good point on the matt finish as well as less chance for the light to sheen and show any imperfections

Cheers Pompey - just seen your room and it looks great mate !!

Just a quick example of the difference between the 2.

Red against the magnolia:

And red against the white:

What looks the 'cleaner' of the two ?

Red will be fine!! - its the best shade I found to resemble almost the same qualities as black for cinema viewing:, Here I am using Red Stallion:

Red wall for sure.. check out my thread in my signature to see how well the red offsets against the brilliant white skirting. FYI i used volcanic splash 2 by dulux.

can`t you rub them down first, buy a little sander for £15 from B&Q and you`ll get a lovely smooth finish, don`t use your hand as you`ll end up with grooves from yer fingers and no skin

If money`s tight just buy a sanding block or use a piece of flat wood with some sand paper

Should look great when its done and also use a matt finish as Dave says

cheers Al
