Re: What tool to channel out??

Yes, that would do the job. I used an SDS drill and this chisel and the wider version for all the chasing when I was rewiring my house.

It does throw a lot of muck around, so wearing something like this would be a good idea.

Re: What tool to channel out??

The tool is exactly what I have used, but I did not go as far as wearing a space helmet.
A good pair of goggles and mouth mask is enough.

Forgot to mention the SDS drill MUST have rotoary stop. i.e. it can carry on hammering but does not rotate.

Re: What tool to channel out??

As mentioned, the drill must have rotary stop function. We use these regularly at work to cut letterbox holes in reinforced concrete walls. For cutting plasterboard though I would say its way overboard and will absolutely mueller it.

Im assuming youve already checked that its a 'dot n dab' wall? If theyre partition walls then you should only need a pad saw. If it is dot n dab I would say just to use a very sharp chisel with hammer, manually! I did it for the two lights in the bay window in my kitchen. Very neat cuts, perfectly sized for the trunking I was putting in.

Well, thats my opinion anyway!

Hope this helps!

I'm using an angle grinder right now and it works a charm.

Is a 'wall chaser' different to the tools mentioned above?

Thanks

Re: What tool to channel out??

I would definitely get a wall chaser it will save you hours.

Have a look on ebay you will find them around £30 new.

Floor to ceiling cutting plaster/concrete block takes 30 seconds!
I chased in all the cables in my extension it was so easy.

Make sure you hook it up to a powerful vacuum cleaner though, the dust it kicks out is staggering!

Re: What tool to channel out??

Yes, those things are so quick, make sure you've planned the route beforehand using a stud detector.
For example: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/27558/...TECTOR-_-27558

Wall chasers are very good BUT the amount of dust is incredible.

Re: What tool to channel out??

Hi

Sorry to be totally dense here, but does the wall chaser just cut 2 lines in a brick wall?

Do you then have to knock the brick out with a hammer then or am I missing something

Thanks

Re: What tool to channel out??

Albriscoe used a vibrating tool (ooer!) rather like thing they use to cut the plaster off of broken limbs which apparently worked very well and produced very little dust. I think the details are in his thread.

Re: What tool to channel out??

I used a chaser, and then kocked out with a chisel and lump hammer. Very easy to control and not as much mess as a pwer tool.

Use eye/hand protection and a dust mask though!

Re: What tool to channel out??

I have read on these forums about some people using wall chasers starting on the widest setting they need the channel to be, then repeating the pass with the blades closer together so it is easier to chisel afterwards.

Not done this myself yet but the logic seems sound enough, and the results are apparently very good too. Oh yeah, they attached a baton to the wall first to act as a guide for the machine and get a nice straight line

Wish I could remember where I read it - it was a long time ago...
