Spacing of Downlighters.

I'm looking at fitting halogen downlights into a few rooms but I'm unsure how many are required, what spacings are needed and what wattage - so hope someone could give me some pointers.

Looking to fit them in a Hallway, AV Room, Kitchen, Bedroom & Ensuite bathroom.

Any help appreciated.

There's a couple of links from here that may help:

Re: Spacing of Downlighters.

OK, I'll get the ball rolling. I used 6 50w fittings in a room about 3.5m x 3.5m. It's certainly bright enough when they're all on full, I think it's about right with that number. I could have maybe got away with four.

Lay them out using Golden Section. - The gap between lights is 1.618 times the gap between the light and the wall.

Regards,
MarkP

Re: Spacing of Downlighters.

Make sure you know about Part P regulations mate as the kitchen and ensuite bathrooms will come under special zones.

Its OK mate - I'm an architectural technician, and there's no way I'd touch electrics myself!

Re: Spacing of Downlighters.

Not sure if this is any help but this is what I've done in our open plan kitchen / dining / sitting room.

We find the light from our setup is nice and warm and not overly harsh plus it complements our wooden floors very well - all lamps are 50W. Unless you want to highlight something on the wall (i.e a picture) I'd keep them in at least 1 meter and to avoid shadows I also add some wall and uplights.

Re: Spacing of Downlighters.

Lighting designers only use down lighters for ambient light or highlighting specific items. I would use them to wash the walls for ambient then use other sources for task and accent lighting. Light shining directly down onto seating areas is a no, no as it is uncomfortable to sit under and not very flattering. well thats according to the books i've read.
